Tilak Varma unfazed by new batting role after Zimbabwe win: Will do what team needs

India batter Tilak Varma put the noise around his form aside and delivered when it mattered, playing a blistering cameo in India’s 72-run win over Zimbabwe to keep their T20 World Cup defence alive. Batting at No.6 instead of his usual No.3, Tilak said he is happy to adapt his role if it serves the team’s needs.

Speaking after the match, Tilak made it clear that flexibility is part of his mindset. India reshuffled their batting order for the must-win clash vs Zimbabwe on Thursday, bringing in Sanju Samson and Axar Patel, which pushed Tilak down the order. The change worked as the left-hander responded with an unbeaten 44 off just 16 balls, helping India pile up 256/4 at Chepauk.

“I always say that whatever team needs, I’m up for it. So I’ve done the same role since the last four years in IPL for Mumbai Indians, and also I’ve done a few games for the Indian team. So I’m up for it. Whatever the team needs, I’m up. And according to the situation, I can adjust. But as I said before I was just waiting for one innings. So I am really grateful to God for that. Right time it has been given, but I am up for it. I am pretty confident now that going forward I can win the games for the team,” Tilak said at the post-match press conference.

Before this game, Tilak had struggled for rhythm in the tournament. His previous scores of 25, 25, 25, 31 and 1 reflected starts without fluency, with his strike rate hovering below 120. That had raised questions about his role and effectiveness, especially on slower pitches.

But against Zimbabwe, the shift down the order brought a fresh spark. Tilak attacked from the outset, striking three fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 275. His partnership with Hardik Pandya turned the innings from strong to dominant.

HOW TILAK VARMA ROSE BACK FROM SLUMP

Tilak’s innings was less about redemption and more about timing. He had shown glimpses earlier in the tournament but had not converted them into impactful contributions.

At No.6, he found the freedom to play instinctively. Alongside Hardik Pandya, he stitched an 84-run stand in just 31 balls that lifted India to one of the highest totals in T20 World Cup history.

The innings also reflected his ability to switch gears when required. After a phase where he had played cautiously higher up the order, this knock showed he could deliver explosiveness when the team needed acceleration.

HOW CAN INDIA QUALIFY FOR SEMI-FINALS

India’s win over Zimbabwe kept their hopes alive and significantly improved their Net Run Rate after the setback against South Africa.

The equation is now simple. India must beat West Indies in their final Super 8 clash to secure a semi-final spot.

A defeat would end their campaign, while a win would take them through with four points from three matches. The upcoming clash effectively becomes a knockout game for India’s title defence.
