Former Australia leg-spinner Stuart MacGill is at the centre of controversy following a heated exchange on the Cricket Unfiltered podcast with Andrew Menczel. What began as a discussion about Candice Warner, the wife of David Warner, and the abuse she faced in South Africa during the infamous 2018 Test series quickly spiralled into one of the most uncomfortable on-air moments.
During a segment of the podcast, host Andrew Menczel criticised the crowd taunts aimed at Candice during Australia’s 2018 tour of South Africa, where fans wore masks of New Zealand professional boxer Sonny Bill Williams, with whom Candice had been photographed in a compromising situation in a men’s washroom in 2007.
Menczel described the behaviour as disgraceful and well beyond acceptable boundaries. However, MacGill objected to revisiting the specifics of the incident, and the discussion escalated rapidly. What began as a disagreement over media responsibility soon shifted into a personal confrontation.
Interrupting his co-host, MacGill argued that detailing the abuse was unnecessary, accusing Menczel of perpetuating the issue by bringing it up again. The exchange stunned listeners, as the debate moved away from the original topic and descended into sharp personal insults.
MacGill interrupted Menczel, saying: “Well, I think it’s pretty low talking about it for starters, Menners. I think you didn’t need to go into details here. I think that’s s*. You’re a f***ing idiot. You shouldn’t go into details about things like this because you’re doing exactly the same as the crowd. OK. We’re not going to talk about that anymore.”
MacGill threatened to engage in physical violence
MacGill was clearly displeased with the direction of the discussion and urged Menczel to respect the players and their families. He alleged that the podcaster was behaving no differently from the South African crowd and pointed out that Candice is a close friend of his. He went on to call Menczel ‘pig-headed’ and a ‘moron’, angrily demanding that he move on to the next topic of discussion.
MacGill escalated the confrontation further by warning that if any portion of the exchange were edited out, it would mark the end of his working relationship with Menczel. At one stage, he also made a remark suggesting physical aggression, saying he might “jump across the mic”. In the end, as the situation appeared to be getting out of control, Menczel quickly wrapped up and ended the segment.
Meanwhile, the ugly confrontation between the two has blown up online, with fans criticising MacGill for his behaviour on the podcast. Many have called out what they described as aggressive conduct, particularly his threatening language towards the host.
