Will Andrew Garfield return as Spider-Man in Avengers: Doomsday? Actor clarifies

Actor Andrew Garfield is working hard to dispel a persistent rumour, insisting that he and Tobey Maguire will not be making a comeback as their versions of Spider-Man in Marvel’s upcoming ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ (2026). However, fans remain understandably sceptical, given Garfield’s history of flat-out lying to the press about his surprise appearance in ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ (2021).

Speaking during a recent interview for GQ, the Oscar nominee directly addressed a fan’s burning question about his future in the MCU. When asked, “Will Tobey and Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Men be in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ as well?” Garfield didn’t mince words, offering a blunt and emphatic denial: “No, unequivocally f*****g no.”

All throughout 2021, Garfield staunchly denied any involvement in the multiverse crossover, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Naturally, he went on to make a dramatic appearance opposite both Tom Holland and Maguire’s versions of the web-slinger. This unprecedented cinematic moment was a huge driver for the film, powering No Way Home to a staggering $1.9 billion at the worldwide box office.

The actor first took on the role of Peter Parker in the 2012 film, ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’. However, his run as the superhero was curtailed following the underwhelming box office performance of ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’ in 2014. Speaking to Esquire Magazine last year, the actor described the abrupt conclusion to his tenure, saying he was “left dangling” when the role came to such a swift end. Because of this, his return for ‘No Way Home’ felt very much like a true homecoming.

“I thought Tobey is not going to want to do that. He’ll act every 10 years, much to my chagrin, and I’ve shared that to him,” Garfield admitted about his ‘No Way Home’ doubts. “When I heard that he was kind of leaning in I thought it was either going to be the greatest thing in the world or the worst thing in the world. I am so grateful because it was the most joyful thing ever. All the pressure was on Tom,” he added.

The 42-year-old further said, “I would 100% come back [as Spider-Man]” after his ‘No Way Home’ appearance “if it was the right thing, if it’s additive to the culture, if there’s a great concept or something that hasn’t been done before that’s unique and odd and exciting and that you can sink your teeth into. I love that character, and it brings joy. If part of what I bring is joy, then I’m joyful in return.”

Holland is currently in production on ‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’. Rumours have already circulated that Garfield would pop up as Spider-Man in that movie. Garfield denied the claims, as reported by Variety. He stated, “I’m going to disappoint you. Yeah, no. But I know no one’s going to trust anything I say from now on.”

‘Avengers Doomsday’ is scheduled to release in 2026.
