Game of Thrones film on Aegon’s conquest officially in the works

Warner Bros. is officially moving ahead with a feature film set in the universe created by George RR Martin, marking what could become the first big-screen adaptation of the Game of Thrones franchise.

The studio is developing a large-scale epic centred on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros — a defining event in mythology that chronicles how the Seven Kingdoms were unified under Targaryen rule. The project is currently in development, following years of speculation about whether the globally successful fantasy saga would eventually make the leap from television to cinema.

Acclaimed writer Beau Willimon has been roped in to pen the screenplay. Willimon, known for his work on Andor and House of Cards, is expected to bring significant political and dramatic storytelling experience to the project – elements that are central to Aegon’s campaign of fire and blood. News of his involvement was first reported by Page Six and later referenced in a recent profile by The Hollywood Reporter that examined Martin’s ongoing role in shaping the franchise’s expansion.

The film is being envisioned as a large-scale cinematic spectacle, described internally as a “Dune-sized” feature. If realised at that scale, it would signal Warner Bros.’ intent to mount a grand theatrical event rooted in the franchise’s most mythic chapter — complete with dragons, warfare and dynastic power struggles.

Interestingly, HBO is also developing a separate adaptation of Aegon’s story in series form. While both projects are expected to explore the same historical chapter of Westeros, Warner Bros. is pursuing a feature-film approach, potentially offering a distinct interpretation of the material.

The proposed movie is part of a wider expansion of the Game of Thrones universe. Alongside the film and HBO’s planned series, other projects are also in development, including an animated show focused on the Sea Snake character. The strategy reflects continued efforts to build the franchise across multiple formats following the end of the original series in 2019.

At the same time, corporate developments may influence the film’s timeline. Warner Bros. is reportedly expected to be sold to Paramount Skydance, creating some uncertainty around production schedules and long-term planning. However, Paramount’s David Ellison has previously cited Game of Thrones as his favourite HBO series, a comment that could indicate sustained interest in nurturing the property.

The idea of adapting Game of Thrones for the big screen is not entirely new. In 2013, original showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss had pitched a trilogy of feature films to conclude the series. HBO ultimately chose to maintain a television format, opting instead to complete the story within its existing framework.

In the years since, the franchise has regained momentum through spin-offs.

Meanwhile, House of the Dragon is set to return for its third season this summer, while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is currently filming its second season.
