E20 petrol with RON 95 from April 1: What it means for your car, especially if it’s not E20-ready

From April 1, 2026, petrol pumps across India will begin supplying ethanol-blended petrol with up to 20 per cent ethanol and a minimum Research Octane Number (RON) of 95. The directive, issued by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, marks the next step in the country’s ethanol-blending roadmap.

But what exactly is RON 95? And what does a 20 per cent ethanol blend combined with a higher octane rating mean for your car, particularly if it’s not certified for E20?

Here’s a closer look.

First, what is RON 95?

RON, or Research Octane Number, measures a fuel’s resistance to engine knocking, a phenomenon where fuel-air mixture ignites unevenly inside the engine cylinder. Knocking reduces efficiency and over time, can damage engine components.

The higher the RON, the better the fuel can withstand compression before igniting. In simple terms:

  • Higher RON = better resistance to knocking
  • Better suited for high-compression or turbocharged engines

A RON 95 rating is typically associated with premium petrol in India. Mandating a minimum RON 95 for E20 ensures that performance and combustion stability are not compromised despite the higher ethanol content.

Why add 20% Ethanol?

Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from sugarcane, maize, and other agricultural feedstock. By increasing blending to 20 per cent, the government aims to:

  • Reduce crude oil imports
  • Cut tailpipe emissions
  • Support domestic farmers and ethanol producers
  • Strengthen energy security

The fuel will conform to standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), ensuring uniformity in quality across states.

What does E20 + RON 95 mean for your car?

If you own an E20-compatible vehicle

Most new cars and two-wheelers launched in India since 2023 have been engineered or updated to handle E20 fuel. For these vehicles:

  • The engine, fuel lines, seals and injectors are designed to withstand ethanol’s higher corrosive properties.
  • ECU mapping is calibrated for ethanol-blended fuel.
  • Performance should remain stable.
  • You may see a slight dip in fuel efficiency (ethanol has lower energy density than pure petrol), but it’s typically marginal.

In fact, the higher RON 95 rating could benefit turbocharged petrol engines by offering smoother combustion and potentially improved performance consistency.

If you own a non-E20 Car (Older vehicles)

This is where things get more nuanced.

Vehicles not designed for E20 may face the following concerns:

Material compatibility

Ethanol is more corrosive than petrol. Older fuel hoses, rubber seals, gaskets and metal components may degrade faster over time.

Fuel efficiency drop

Because ethanol contains less energy per litre than petrol, you could experience:

  • lower mileage (varies by vehicle and driving style)
  • Cold start issues

In some cases, especially in older engines, higher ethanol content can affect cold-start performance.

Long-term wear

Continuous use of E20 in non-compatible engines may increase wear in fuel pumps and injectors if not designed for it.

This means owners of older cars, particularly pre-2020 petrol vehicles, should:

  • Check their owner’s manual for E20 compatibility
  • Consult authorised service centres
  • Consider preventive inspection of fuel system components

India’s ethanol push is part of a long-term strategy to cut oil import dependency and promote cleaner mobility. While the transition may bring short-term adjustment challenges for older vehicles, automakers have already begun rolling out E20-compatible engines and retrofit solutions.

The combination of 20 per cent ethanol and RON 95 is essentially an attempt to balance environmental goals with engine performance stability.

For new-car buyers, it’s unlikely to be a concern.

For owners of older petrol vehicles, awareness and possibly proactive maintenance will be key.

April 1, 2026 may not change how you refuel overnight. But it does signal a significant shift in what flows from the pump and what your engine needs to handle going forward.
