AI agents come to Jira, Atlassian says they will work alongside humans

Atlassian, a major enterprise software provider, has announced that now its clients will be able to have AI work alongside human employees. According to the company, users will now be able to use AI agents such as Atlassian’s Rovo, along with third-party AI models via its Jira platform.

This will allow teams to not only view but also assign tasks to AI agents on the same dashboard as human employees. Atlassian’s announcement comes at a time when AI agents are rapidly growing in popularity. Anthropic’s Claude Cowork has already rattled several industries with its capabilities.

How will AI agents work on Jira?

According to the company, users will be able to work with AI agents on Jira, with the ability to assign tasks and collaborate with agents through comments and assign them as accountable teammates.

Atlassian says this approach is designed to keep work coordinated and integrated on a single platform without having to rely on external platforms for using AI agents. With agents in Jira, currently in open beta, users can loop in AI agents during ongoing projects, allowing for in-context collaboration and workflow adjustments.

This integration ensures that AI agents respect existing project configurations, permissions, audit trails, and approval flows. Previously, AI-driven work in project management tools was often handled through limited integrations.

AI and human progress on the same dashboard

Atlassian’s update allows companies to not only assign tasks in the same platform, but even monitor and compare the work done by humans and AI. At a time when companies are investing heavily in an AI-driven future, this may present a good perspective on the actual productivity brought by AI agents.

Atlassian also announced new investments in the Model Context Protocol (MCP). MCP is a standard that allows AI to access tools, data, and workflows, letting organisations choose the most suitable agents for their needs.

Rovo agents can now connect with MCP-enabled third-party applications such as Amplitude, and Figma, allowing agents to pull live context and perform a wider range of tasks.
