What is Magic Johnson’s new Lakers role? NBA legend’s position explained amid major Rob Pelinka news

The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a new chapter under majority owner Mark Walter. However, the structure at the top of basketball operations is reportedly steady. As leadership changes take shape on the business side, clarity has emerged about who will guide roster decisions and how franchise icon Magic Johnson fits into the picture.

Lon Rosen, recently hired as president of business operations, addressed speculation about potential front office shifts. While fans anticipated sweeping changes, Rosen confirmed continuity in key roles. Rob Pelinka will continue to oversee basketball operations, and Magic Johnson will stay connected to the franchise without holding a formal title.

What is Magic Johnson’s new Lakers role?

Magic Johnson will not carry an official designation with the Lakers. However, his presence around the organization is expected to continue. Rosen stated that while , no official title is planned for him with the Lakers.

Johnson’s relationship with the Lakers spans decades as a Hall of Fame player and former executive. He previously served alongside Pelinka in the front office before stepping down in 2019. Since then, the two reconciled following the team’s 2020 championship run.

Rosen shares a long professional history with Johnson, having worked closely with him for years and collaborated within the Dodgers organization. That connection makes Johnson’s informal involvement less surprising.

The Lakers are also drawing inspiration from the Los Angeles Dodgers’ model. Andrew Friedman and Farhan Zaidi are expected to offer input as Pelinka expands the front office. The approach signals collaboration while preserving Pelinka’s authority over basketball decisions.

Lakers retain Rob Pelinka as head of basketball operations

Despite public debate over his tenure, Rob Pelinka will remain president of basketball operations. He signed an extension last year and continues to lead roster construction. Under his guidance, the Lakers secured their 17th NBA title in 2020 and executed major acquisitions, including LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Luka Doncic.

Rosen expressed enthusiasm about his own appointment while outlining his broader mission. “I’m beyond grateful to Jeanie and Mark for trusting me with this incredible opportunity,” said Rosen. “As everyone knows, the economics of the sports business are constantly changing – and they will continue to do so.

“But, at root, my job is a simple one: figuring out how to do right by our employees and our partners while ensuring that the Lakers continue to provide an unparalleled experience for our fans in Los Angeles and around the world. I look forward to working alongside Jeanie, Rob and the whole front-office team to make that happen.”

As of now, the Lakers’ basketball leadership remains intact. Magic Johnson stays close. Rob Pelinka stays in charge.
