THE URINE ACR TEST: A SIMPLE AND AFFORDABLE OPTION
Instead of depending only on blood tests, doctors recommend adding a urine ACR test. ACR stands for Albumin-Creatinine Ratio.
This test checks whether a small amount of protein called albumin is leaking into the urine.
Healthy kidneys prevent albumin from passing into the urine. If albumin is found in higher amounts, it may be an early sign that the kidneys are under stress or already damaged.
An ACR level above 30 mg/g is considered abnormal and may indicate early kidney damage even when blood tests appear normal.
This makes the urine ACR test a powerful tool for early detection.
EARLY DETECTION COULD PREVENT DIALYSIS
One of the biggest advantages of the urine ACR test is that it can detect kidney damage up to five years earlier than standard blood tests.
This early warning gives patients and doctors valuable time to act.
With timely treatment, patients can better control blood sugar and blood pressure, two major causes of kidney damage.
Lifestyle changes such as reducing salt intake, maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and taking prescribed medicines can significantly slow down the progression of kidney disease.
Early intervention may help prevent serious complications, including kidney failure and the need for dialysis or transplant.
WHO SHOULD GET TESTED AND HOW OFTEN?
Doctors strongly advise people with diabetes or high blood pressure to get both a KFT and a urine ACR test at least once or twice a year.
Regular monitoring allows doctors to track any changes and adjust treatment plans quickly.
Even individuals with a family history of kidney disease or long-term use of certain medications should consider regular screening.
Since the urine ACR test costs roughly 300–700 in major Indian cities, it is both accessible and affordable for most people.
Kidney failure does not happen overnight. It develops gradually, often without symptoms.
Relying only on traditional blood tests may not be enough to catch early damage.
A simple urine ACR test, quick, affordable, and widely available, could make a life-saving difference.
By detecting kidney stress years in advance, it offers patients a chance to take control of their health and prevent irreversible damage.
Regular testing, combined with proper medical care and healthy lifestyle habits, remains the best defence against chronic kidney disease.
