Kash Patel faces backlash over locker-room party with US hockey team. He responds

A moment meant to belong entirely to celebration spilled into controversy this weekend, after FBI Director Kash Patel appeared alongside the United States men’s ice-hockey team during their gold-medal victory bash at the Winter Olympics in Italy.

The US clinched a dramatic 2-1 overtime victory over arch rivals Canada on Sunday, securing its first Olympic men’s hockey gold since 1980. The win triggered scrutiny over the presence of one of America’s most senior law-enforcement officials in the locker room celebrations.

Patel, who is a keen hockey supporter, attended both the semi-final and gold-medal matches. Videos circulating on social media showed him celebrating with players inside the locker room after the final whistle, at one point holding a beer and posing for photos with team members. In an Instagram Live stream with forward Dylan Larkin, Patel appeared animated and fully immersed in celebrations.

Online reactions quickly turned sharp. Social media users questioned whether the trip blurred professional boundaries or used American taxpayer’s taxpayers money for personal interests. Some posts accused Patel of “celebrating like he personally scored the winning goal” and asked “how much of our tax dollars funded this trip”.

Others took aim at the video of the FBI director partying with athletes. “Ya, if I got to use the FBI private jet as my personal transportation, I’d be partying with a lot of teams too,” one viral post read. Another critic said the scenes looked like “a fan living out a fantasy while the country has real issues at home”.

The backlash gathered momentum as clips of the locker-room scenes went viral.

PATEL DEFENDS HIS PRESENCE IN LOCKER ROOM CELEBRATIONS

Patel responded directly on X, framing his presence as a personal honour rather than an official intrusion.

“For the very concerned media — yes, I love America and was extremely humbled when my friends, the newly minted Gold Medal winners on Team USA, invited me into the locker room to celebrate this historic moment with the boys,” he wrote.

An FBI spokesperson later told the Daily Mail that Patel’s travel to Italy had been “planned months ago” and was undertaken for official business, pushing back on allegations that the trip was arranged around the hockey tournament.

While President Donald Trump did not attend the final in person, Patel connected him to the team via phone from the locker room. Trump invited the players to the State of the Union address and proposed a White House ceremony honouring both the men’s and women’s gold-medal teams.

Patel could be heard volunteering to coordinate the visit.
