IISc invites applications to host MTech Bioengineering students for Summer Internship 2026

The Department of Bioengineering at the Indian Institute of Science has invited organisations to host its MTech Bioengineering students from the Class of 2026 for Summer Internships. The outreach is aimed at companies, research centres and technology groups looking to engage with postgraduate talent trained at the institute’s Bengaluru campus.

The call places students at the centre of the initiative, highlighting their laboratory depth, computational strength and readiness for applied industry roles. Organisations have been encouraged to connect directly with the department to explore internship placements for the upcoming summer cycle.

The Department of Bioengineering describes itself as being “focused on cutting-edge research in the interdisciplinary areas of Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering and Biotechnology,” according to an X post. The post further notes that researchers utilise “a variety of scientific tools” to explore biological systems and develop methods to modulate them for therapeutic as well as industrial purposes.

This approach is reflected in the classroom and laboratory. The MTech course offers the study of Biomaterials Science, Drug Delivery: Principles and Applications, Devices and Diagnostics, Bioinformatics, Molecular Systems Biology, AI for Biomedical Research, and Data Science and Machine Learning.

Students are given a cross, disciplinary training to integrate biology with computation and engineering and develop their abilities along the lines of research and development of products.

Work experience through practical applications is a major component of the programme. Students get to use Microscopy techniques such as SEM and TEM, as well as Molecular Biology methods like PCR, Gel Electrophoresis, Western Blotting and ELISA. The practice also includes Flow Cytometry and sophisticated Image Processing using deep learning algorithms.

On the programming side, students are provided with Data Analysis tools such as R, Python and MATLAB, in addition to NGS Data Analysis pipelines.

The department maintains a faculty-to-student ratio of 1:6 across the department and 1:2 for the MTech programme, enabling close academic engagement.

The Class of 2027 comprises 19 students, with a gender distribution of 53 per cent and 47 per cent.

The department notes that it offers “industry ready bioengineering graduates” with “data-driven biological insight” and “cross-domain technical fluency,” as stated in the X post.

Internship coordination is handled by the Office of Career Counselling and Placements. Professor Bhaskara Rao Chintada serves as Department Coordinator. Organisations may write to office.be@iisc.ac.in or contact 080-2293 2624. Placement queries may be directed to placement.occap@iisc.ac.in or 8291292757.
