Bay of Bengal system to bring rain to South from Saturday, North to stay dry

India is witnessing a peculiar weather shift as February draws to a close. While the northern plains prepare for an early brush with summer, a significant weather system in the Bay of Bengal is set to drench the southern peninsula.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rainfall is likely at isolated places over south Tamil Nadu and south Kerala on Saturday, February 21.

This activity is driven by a low pressure area that is currently influencing the coastal regions.

WILL IT RAIN IN YOUR CITY TOMORROW?

The impact of this system will be felt across several states. Devendra Tripathi, founder of Mausam Tak and weather vlogger for Kisan Tak, notes that the system building on the banks of the Bengal river will bring scattered light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms.

Chennai, Puducherry, and Kerala are expected to see moderate to strong winds.

He explains that on Saturday, clouds will reach some interior portions of Bengaluru and Karnataka, along with Telangana and Maharashtra, adding that while Vidarbha and Marathwada might see cloud cover, the chances of actual rainfall in Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh remain very slim.

IS THE WINTER CHILL PERMANENTLY LEAVING NORTH INDIA?

In the north, the narrative is entirely different. Skymet reports that Delhi and its neighbouring states like Haryana and Rajasthan are headed for warm and dry days.

The IMD has forecast a gradual rise in maximum temperatures by two to four degrees Celsius over Northwest India during the next seven days.

WHAT SHOULD WE EXPECT IN THE MOUNTAINS?

While the plains heat up, the Himalayan region from Kashmir to Uttarakhand is expected to remain clear. Devendra Tripathi points out that the entire region will be dry with no clouds, though there is a possibility of increasing temperatures in the mountains during the day.

However, for those in the Indo-Gangetic plains, the transition is smoother.

Devendra Tripathi mentions that cold and dry winds will continue from Punjab to Bihar, ensuring the weather remains very pleasant during the morning and night despite the rising afternoon heat.
