Aadhaar Card Update: Soon Change Mobile Number Online from Home

Aadhaar Card Update: Soon Change Mobile Number Online from Home

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) is set to launch a new feature allowing Aadhaar holders to update their registered mobile number entirely online, eliminating the need to visit an enrolment centre.

Key Takeaways

  • UIDAI will soon enable mobile number updates via the official Aadhaar app.
  • The process uses OTP and face authentication for secure verification.
  • This move aims to benefit senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and residents in remote areas.

In an announcement on social media platform X, UIDAI confirmed that the upcoming feature will use secure digital verification from the comfort of one’s home.

“Coming Soon! Update mobile number in Aadhaar from the comfort of your home through OTP & Face Authentication,” UIDAI wrote in its official post on X (formerly Twitter).

Currently, updating a mobile number linked to Aadhaar requires a visit to an Aadhaar Seva Kendra—a process often seen as time-consuming and inconvenient, especially for vulnerable groups.

How the New Online Update Feature Will Work

The new system will employ a two-step security process:

  1. OTP Verification: An OTP will be sent to the user’s existing or new mobile number.
  2. Face Authentication: The user must then complete a face scan using the Aadhaar app’s built-in tools to confirm their identity.

UIDAI has emphasised that this method maintains high security while removing the need for physical documents or centre visits. The authority’s post stated: “No more standing in the queue at the Aadhaar Centre.”

How to Use the Official Aadhaar App

To prepare for the new feature, ensure you have the official Aadhaar app installed and set up:

  • Download the App: Get the official “Aadhaar” app from the Google Play Store (Android) or Apple App Store (iOS).
  • Enter Aadhaar Number: Open the app, select your language, and input your 12-digit Aadhaar number.
  • Verify with OTP: Complete verification using the OTP sent to your registered mobile number.
  • Complete Face Authentication: Perform the mandatory face scan to secure your profile.
  • Set Security PIN: Create a six-digit PIN to lock your app profile.

This digital shift by UIDAI marks a significant step towards making essential identity services more accessible to all residents of India.
