India Targets ₹1 Lakh Crore Seafood Exports by 2030

India has announced an ambitious target to increase seafood exports to ₹1 lakh crore by 2030, as revealed by the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying during World Fisheries Day celebrations.

  • Sector supports 3 crore livelihoods

Major Policy Initiatives Launched

The government released the National Framework on Traceability in Fisheries and Aquaculture 2025, along with new guidelines and standard operating procedures to modernize the fisheries value chain.

Union Minister Rajiv Ranjan Singh emphasized that innovation, traceability, packaging, and brand-building are crucial for strengthening India’s global competitiveness. He described the traceability framework as a “game-changing reform” that would help fishers secure better returns.

Remarkable Growth Achievements

Minister of State George Kurian revealed that India has doubled fish production from 96 lakh tonnes to 195 lakh tonnes over the past decade, supported by ₹38,572 crore investments under initiatives like PMMSY.

Fisheries Secretary Dr. Abhilaksh Likhi reported that seafood export volume reached 16.85 lakh tonnes in FY 2024-25, marking an 88% increase over the last ten years.

Future Roadmap and Sustainability

The government aims to ensure that 30% of seafood exports by 2030 come from high-value and value-added products. Prof. S.P. Singh Baghel highlighted that GST reforms, digital processes, and expansion in registered exporters have significantly improved the business environment.

Ecological sustainability remains a priority, with ongoing marine mammal studies and adoption of Turtle Excluder Devices to protect marine life while maintaining production growth.
