President Murmu Makes Historic First Visit to Angola

President Droupadi Murmu arrived in Luanda, Angola, on Saturday night, marking the first-ever state visit by an Indian Head of State to the African nation. This historic trip underscores India’s deepening commitment to strengthening ties with Africa and the Global South.

The visit, from November 8-11, comes at the invitation of President Lourenço, who had visited India in May and extended the invitation. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the visit reflects India’s growing focus on strengthening multi-dimensional partnerships with Global South nations.

MEA Secretary Sudhakar Dalela noted that discussions will include the translocation of cheetahs from Botswana as part of .

Botswana Leg of the Tour

Following her Angola visit, President Murmu will travel to Botswana from November 11-13 at the invitation of President Duma Gideon Boko. The agenda includes bilateral discussions focusing on expanding cooperation in:

  • Trade and investment
  • Technology and energy
  • Agriculture and health
  • Pharmaceuticals and defence
  • People-to-people exchanges

She will also address the National Assembly of Botswana and visit cultural and historical sites.

Strengthening India-Africa Relations

India’s relations with Africa have expanded significantly in recent years, with growing collaboration in capacity building, digital public infrastructure, energy transition, and multilateral cooperation. This presidential visit is expected to further cement these strategic and people-centric partnerships across the continent.
