Microsoft and OpenAI Deepen Strategic Partnership
Microsoft has solidified its partnership with OpenAI through a new definitive agreement, securing a significant 27% stake in the AI research company and retaining exclusive intellectual property rights and Azure API exclusivity until the development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).
Key Details of the Agreement
In an official blog post, Microsoft stated: “As we enter the next phase of this partnership, we’ve signed a new definitive agreement that builds on our foundation, strengthens our partnership, and sets the stage for long-term success for both organisations.”
The agreement confirms OpenAI, led by Sam Altman, will continue as Microsoft’s primary frontier model partner. Following the recapitalization, Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI Group PBC is valued at approximately $135 billion.
This represents roughly 27 percent ownership on an as-converted diluted basis, inclusive of all owners—employees, investors, and the OpenAI Foundation.
