Flight Delays Hit Major US Airports Amid Staffing Shortages

Key Takeaways

  • Newark (EWR) and Houston (IAH) airports facing major delays due to Ground Delay Programs
  • Newark delays average 55 minutes, Houston delays average 34 minutes
  • Over 4,200 flights delayed nationwide on Thursday
  • Government shutdown affecting air traffic controller staffing

Major US airports are experiencing significant flight disruptions this Friday, with Newark Liberty International and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental among the hardest hit. The delays stem from air traffic congestion and staffing shortages during the ongoing government shutdown.

Airport-Specific Impact

At Newark Airport (EWR), a Ground Delay Program limits arrivals to just 34 flights per hour. This results in average delays of 55 minutes, with some flights delayed up to 126 minutes. The program addresses volume and compacted demand during peak travel periods.

Houston’s IAH faces similar restrictions, with arrivals capped at 48 flights per hour. Staffing shortages and ongoing runway construction contribute to average delays of 34 minutes, extending to 85 minutes for some flights.

Nationwide Ripple Effects

The Federal Aviation Administration emphasizes these programs manage airport capacity safely and reduce congestion. However, arrival restrictions create ripple effects, impacting connecting flights across the country.

This follows Thursday’s disruptions where ground stops affected Newark, Houston, New York’s LaGuardia, and Washington’s Reagan airports. FlightAware reported over 4,200 delayed flights, with more than 15% of flights affected at Reagan, Newark, and LaGuardia.

Government Shutdown Impact

The situation is compounded by the government shutdown, with 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA officers working without pay. Federal officials worry controller absences may increase over the weekend as workers miss their first full paycheck on Tuesday.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said: ‘We fear there will be significant flight delays, disruptions and cancellations in major airports across the country this holiday season.’

Air traffic control has become a central issue in the shutdown debate, with both parties blaming each other for the standoff. Unions and airlines are urging a quick resolution.

Traveler Advisory

Travelers should check with airlines before heading to airports, allow extra time, and monitor real-time flight updates. The Newark GDP runs until at least 11:59 PM ET, while Houston’s ground stop expires at 9:00 PM ET.
