India Seeks Stronger Germany Trade Ties Amid Widening Deficit

Key Takeaways

  • Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal visits Germany to strengthen economic ties amid widening trade deficit
  • Discussions to focus on renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and technology sectors
  • India’s trade deficit with Germany widened from $6.8 billion in FY24 to $8.03 billion in FY25
  • Visit aims to boost India-EU FTA negotiations and German investment in Indian SMEs

Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal will travel to Berlin on Thursday to reinforce India’s economic partnership with Germany, Europe’s largest economy. The visit comes at a crucial time when India seeks to address its growing trade deficit with Germany while advancing broader India-EU free trade agreement negotiations.

Strategic Timing and Partnerships

The ministerial visit coincides with the 25th anniversary of the India-Germany strategic partnership. Both nations are increasingly focused on diversifying global supply chains and expanding sustainable manufacturing linkages, making this engagement particularly significant.

Germany holds a pivotal position as a key architect of EU trade policy and leader in high-end engineering and automotive technologies. The country remains a crucial investor in emerging markets like India.

Meeting Agenda and Participants

During his visit, Goyal will hold bilateral meetings with German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche and Dr. Levin Holle, Germany’s G7 and G20 Sherpa. Discussions will focus on expanding cooperation in renewable energy, advanced manufacturing, and technology-driven sectors.

The minister will also meet Luxembourg’s Deputy Prime Minister Xavier Bettel to review bilateral trade relations and discuss Luxembourg’s forthcoming state visit to India.

Business Engagement

Goyal’s packed schedule includes CEO-level meetings with major German corporations including Schaeffler Group, Infineon Technologies, and Mercedes-Benz Group. He will chair a roundtable with leaders of German Mittelstand companies and meet representatives of the Federation of German Industries and Asia-Pacific Association of German Business.

Trade Deficit Concerns

India’s trade deficit with Germany has widened significantly, with exports at $10.53 billion against imports of $18.56 billion in FY25. This represents an increase from the previous year’s deficit of $6.8 billion when exports were $9.84 billion and imports reached $16.64 billion.

The growing trade gap reflects India’s continued dependence on German machinery, electrical equipment, and precision technology, while Indian exports remain concentrated in textiles, chemicals, and engineering goods.

Vinod Kumar, President of India SME Forum, emphasized: “Germany is a critical market for Indian exporters, especially in sectors such as engineering, chemicals, and textiles. We expect the minister’s visit to help address market access challenges and encourage greater participation of German investors in India’s SME ecosystem.”

The Berlin Global Dialogue, where Goyal will participate, brings together business and government leaders to debate shifts in the global economic order, providing an additional platform for strengthening India-Germany economic relations.
