NASA Seeks Rival Bids for Artemis 3 Moon Mission Amid SpaceX Delays

NASA Opens Artemis 3 Moon Mission to Rival Bids as SpaceX Faces Delays

NASA is opening the Artemis 3 moon mission contract to competition, citing SpaceX’s schedule delays. Administrator Sean Duffy announced the move to ensure the US beats China in the new space race.

Key Takeaways

  • NASA will seek competitive bids for Artemis 3 moon landing mission
  • SpaceX faces schedule delays with Starship lunar lander
  • Blue Origin and other companies expected to compete
  • President Trump wants mission completed before January 2029

New Competition for Moon Mission

NASA Administrator Sean Duffy confirmed the agency is opening the Artemis 3 contract to rival bidders.

“I’m in the process of opening that contract up. I think we’ll see companies like Blue get involved, and maybe others,” Duffy told Fox News.

Blue Origin, founded by Jeff Bezos, represents SpaceX’s main competition in the commercial space sector.

“We’re going to have a space race in regard to American companies competing to see who can actually get us back to the moon first.”

China Timeline Adds Pressure

The Artemis program aims to return humans to the moon as China targets a 2030 astronaut landing. Artemis 3 was originally scheduled for 2027 using SpaceX’s Starship.

Duffy confirmed SpaceX is behind schedule, potentially putting the US behind its international rival.

“They’re behind schedule, and so the president wants to make sure we beat the Chinese,” Duffy stated.

President Trump wants the mission completed before his White House term ends in January 2029.

Artemis 2 Progress

The Artemis 2 mission remains on track for April 2025, with potential for moving up to February. The 10-day lunar flyby involves systems from Boeing, Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin.

Political Dynamics

Bezos and Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp reportedly met with Trump during summer tensions between the president and Elon Musk. Musk had backed Trump in the 2024 election and led federal government cost-cutting efforts.

Representatives for SpaceX and Blue Origin were unavailable for immediate comment.
