GST 2.0 Impact: Record Car, Electronics Sales as Food Inflation Turns Negative

Key Takeaways

  • Three senior ministers announced major GST 2.0 impacts during Dhanteras
  • Auto sales surged with Maruti selling 1.65 lakh cars in 8 Navratri days
  • Electronics sales jumped 20-25% with 85-inch TVs selling out
  • India enters “food deflation” with negative inflation for farm workers
  • Government monitoring 54 items for GST rate cut benefits to consumers

Three senior cabinet ministers used Dhanteras to announce significant economic impacts from the latest GST reforms. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal, and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw revealed record consumer spending and positive inflation trends during the festive season.

Massive Auto Sales Surge

Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted extraordinary vehicle sales during Navratri. Maruti Suzuki sold 1.65 lakh cars in just the first eight days, while Mahindra recorded a 7% sales increase. Tata Motors sold approximately half a lakh vehicles during the same period, indicating robust consumer demand.

Food Deflation Replaces Inflation

In a significant economic shift, India has entered a phase of “food deflation” according to official data. Retail inflation for farm workers turned negative at -0.07% in September, down from 1.07% in August. Rural workers saw inflation ease to 0.31% from 1.26% the previous month.

The All-India Consumer Price Index for Agricultural Labourers declined to 136.23 points, while the Rural Labourers index fell to 136.42 points in September.

Electronics Sales Break Records

Electronics witnessed unprecedented growth during Navratri, with sales increasing 20-25% compared to last year. IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that premium categories like 85-inch TVs completely sold out across retail stores.

The electronics manufacturing sector, employing over 25 lakh people, benefits directly from this consumption surge. The government projects additional electronics consumption worth Rs 20 lakh crore this year, attributing this growth to recent GST reforms.

GST Benefits Reach Consumers

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman confirmed that GST rate cuts are effectively reaching consumers through reduced prices. The government is actively monitoring 54 items since the new rates took effect on September 22.

“In some cases, businesses have passed on benefits exceeding the weighted-average GST rate cut,” Sitharaman noted. The Department of Consumer Affairs received 3,169 complaints about insufficient price reductions, with 3,075 forwarded to CBIC nodal officers and 94 already resolved.
