AI Apps Hit 1 Billion Users as ChatGPT Surpasses X Platform

AI Apps Surpass 1 Billion Users as ChatGPT Overtakes X

Standalone AI applications have crossed a major milestone, with platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, and Google Gemini now collectively serving over 1 billion users worldwide.

Key Takeaways

  • AI apps now have over 1 billion users globally
  • ChatGPT leads with 800 million users, surpassing X’s 586 million
  • 10% of world’s adult population uses ChatGPT
  • Global survey shows more people are concerned than excited about AI

Rapid Adoption and Market Impact

The achievement comes less than three years after OpenAI launched ChatGPT in November 2022, which became the fastest-growing app in history. According to the Digital 2026 report by Meltwater and We Are Social, “AI is ‘crossing the chasm’, spreading from early adopters into the mass market.”

The 700-page report highlighted that this AI boom is creating ripple effects across the internet, with traditional search engine usage now declining.

“AI increasingly enables users to answer different kinds of questions, and satisfy a much broader range of needs than they could with search engines alone,” said data analyst Simon Kemp.

ChatGPT’s Dominant Growth

ChatGPT has been the primary driver of AI adoption, with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman reporting approximately 800 million users. This represents massive growth from around 250 million users just one year ago.

The platform has now overtaken Elon Musk’s X, which has about 586 million users according to Statista data. Researchers from OpenAI, Duke University, and Harvard University noted last month that approximately 10% of the world’s adult population now uses ChatGPT.

“For a new technology, this speed of global diffusion has no precedent,” they wrote.

Global Concerns About AI

A separate Pew Research Center survey published Wednesday revealed that more people globally are concerned about artificial intelligence than excited by it. The comprehensive study gathered views from over 28,000 people across 25 countries.

Only 16% of respondents said they were more excited than concerned about AI technology.

“Concerns about AI are especially common in the United States, Italy, Australia, Brazil and Greece, where about half of adults say they are more concerned than excited,” the report’s authors wrote.

The survey also identified a strong correlation between a country’s economic status and AI awareness, with people in higher-income nations typically more familiar with artificial intelligence than those in less wealthy economies.
