Tata Sierra likely to make its comeback in mid-November, ICE to come first

Tata Motors is gearing up for one of its most anticipated launches of the year, the comeback of the iconic Sierra SUV. The all-new Sierra, first previewed in near-production form at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in January, will mark the revival of a nameplate that once defined Tata’s SUV legacy in the 1990s.

The Tata Sierra will likely make its market debut in mid-November 2025, with the internal combustion engine (ICE) variants launching first, followed by the electric (EV) version later in the month.

A modern take on retro design

The new Sierra retains the retro-inspired boxy design that made the original a cult favorite, while embracing a contemporary five-door layout for added practicality. A recent test mule spotted in Pune under heavy camouflage confirms the production-ready silhouette, tall bonnet, squared-off stance, and a clean, upright rear profile.

At the front, the Sierra flaunts split LED headlamps, a full-width LED DRL bar, gloss-black grille, and a silver skid plate, underlining its rugged appeal. The rear design echoes the original’s upright theme, featuring connected LED tail lamps, a flat tailgate, and a rear wiper. Previous prototypes have also revealed flush door handles, squared wheel arches, and thick body cladding, adding to its muscular SUV identity.

Vivek Srivatsa, Chief Commercial Officer of Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Limited, confirmed to Auto Today during Harrier.ev launch that both versions of the Sierra, ICE and EV, will arrive before the end of this calendar year.

“The Sierra will definitely come out this calendar year, and it’ll be both in ICE and EV form,” Srivatsa said, more details will be revealed closer to launch.

For the ICE version, Tata is expected to offer two powertrain choices:

  • 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine (new-generation unit)
  • 2.0-litre Kryotec diesel engine (shared with the Harrier and Safari), producing 168bhp and 350Nm of torque

Both engines will likely be paired with 6-speed manual and 6-speed automatic (torque converter) transmissions. While the electric variant is confirmed to feature all-wheel drive (AWD) as seen on the Harrier.ev, it remains uncertain if the ICE model will also come with AWD setup or not.

Sierra EV

The Sierra EV, set to arrive a few weeks after the ICE launch, will sit on Tata’s latest Acti.EV architecture shared with the Harrier EV. It is expected to offer multiple battery pack options with an estimated range of over 500km on a single charge. The model will also feature dual-motor AWD capability.

Inside, the Sierra is expected to offer a premium cabin. A four-spoke steering wheel with an illuminated Tata logo, along with large digital displays, connected car tech, and ADAS features, are expected to feature on higher variants.

The return of an icon

Carrying forward its original tagline, “It takes the rough with the smooth,” the reborn Sierra is designed to strike a balance between nostalgia and modernity. Combining robust design, advanced technology, and a choice of ICE and electric powertrains, Tata aims to appeal to both traditional SUV buyers and EV enthusiasts.
