NHL insider gives major update on Aleksander Barkov and Florida Panthers injury timeline

The Florida Panthers are heading into the new NHL season with major concerns. Team captain Aleksander Barkov is recovering from ACL and MCL surgery, and many feared he would miss the entire 2025 campaign. Alongside him, Matthew Tkachuk is also sidelined, making things tougher for the defending champions. However, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman recently suggested that Barkov may not be fully ruled out for the season, keeping hopes alive for the Panthers and their fans.

Aleksander Barkov’s injury concerns the Florida Panthers

Aleksander Barkov underwent surgery after tearing his ACL and MCL during a practice drill. Initial reports indicated he would miss the season, but his recovery progress has surprised many. Friedman said the Panthers have not declared him out for the year. Barkov was recently spotted at the Stanley Cup ring ceremony without crutches, raising optimism about a potential playoff return.

Matthew Tkachuk’s absence adds more pressure

The loss of Matthew Tkachuk compounds Florida’s issues. He is also expected to be sidelined long-term. This leaves the Panthers without two of their most important forwards, Tkachuk has been central to the team’s success since joining. And his absence puts pressure on the rest of the roster to step up, and this double setback could test the depth of the squad early on.

Florida Panthers season outlook

without stars

The Florida Panthers enter the season as defending champions. But now face significant hurdles. That too without Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk, and the offensive balance and leadership of the squad are affected. And Barkov has 781 career points in 804 games. This includes elite two-way play that earned him multiple Selke Trophies, and if he returns by the postseason. And it could shift the team’s fortunes drastically.

The Florida Panthers face an uphill battle. That too without Aleksander Barkov and Matthew Tkachuk, yet, Barkov’s possible return offers a lifeline. This keeps the team’s playoff hopes alive despite early struggles.
