Virginia’s ex-Lieutenant Governor kills wife then himself amid divorce proceedings

Former Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax shot and killed his wife, Cerina Fairfax, before taking his own life inside their home in Annandale, according to authorities. The incident took place shortly after midnight on Thursday.

Police said the couple’s two teenage children were inside the house at the time of the shooting. One of their sons placed the emergency 911 call. Responding officers found both Justin Fairfax, 47, and his wife dead at the scene.

Fairfax County Police Chief Kevin Davis said the shooting stemmed from an ongoing domestic dispute linked to what he described as a “complicated or messy divorce”, according to CNN. Court records also show the couple had been involved in divorce proceedings in recent months.

Investigators believe the situation had escalated in the lead-up to the incident. Kevin Davis said that Fairfax had recently been served legal paperwork related to upcoming court hearings in the divorce case. Police are reviewing footage from cameras installed inside the home, which were reportedly part of the couple’s legal proceedings.

“We were informed this was tied to a complicated or messy divorce,” Davis said, as cited by reports.

Police confirmed that the couple’s children are now in the care of extended family members, with support from victim services. Kevin Davis described the situation as deeply distressing, particularly given that the children were present during the incident.

“So tragic for the children to lose both parents, extra tragic for them to actually be in the home when it occurred,” he said, according to CNN. Officials also pointed to a previous incident in January, when Fairfax had contacted police alleging assault by his wife. However, Kevin Davis said that claim was not substantiated during the investigation.

JUSTIN FAIRFAX’S FALL FROM PROMINENCE

Fairfax, a Democrat, served as Virginia’s lieutenant governor from 2018 to 2022 under Governor Ralph Northam. His political career was overshadowed by sexual assault allegations made by two women in 2019, which he denied. The controversy stalled his political rise, though he completed his term. According to The New York Times, Fairfax later ran for governor in 2021 but finished fourth in the Democratic primary, securing only a small share of the vote. He subsequently returned to private legal practice, while his wife worked as a dentist.

The case has also drawn attention to Fairfax’s recent financial issues. Court records cited by CNN show he faced civil lawsuits over unpaid debts, which resulted in default judgments against him.
