CBSE Class 10 SST exam 2026: Want full marks in 5-mark answers? Try the IPEC format

With the Central Board of Secondary Education set to conduct the Class 10 Social Science board examination on March 7, 2026, students are entering the most crucial stage of preparation. Social Science is often considered challenging because of its vast syllabus and diverse question formats, from MCQs and assertion-reason questions to map work and long answers.

However, teachers say the pattern of recent sample papers indicates a clear shift. Instead of rewarding rote memorisation, the exam increasingly tests conceptual understanding, analytical thinking and application of knowledge.

Students who understand ideas such as democracy, resources, nationalism and economic development tend to perform better than those who focus only on memorising dates and definitions.

WHAT KIND OF PREPARATION DOES THE CBSE SST PAPER NOW DEMAND?

An analysis of the 2025-26 CBSE Sample Question Papers shows a competency-based approach. This means students are expected to interpret sources, analyse case studies, understand visuals and apply concepts to real-life situations.

“Students who rely only on factual recall may find the paper demanding,” says Vandana Chaturvedi, TGT Social Science at Seth Anandram Jaipuria School, Lucknow.

“Those who focus on conceptual clarity and connections between events will find the paper far more manageable,” Vandana adds.

Teachers suggest that preparation should revolve around NCERT concepts, application-based practice and structured answer writing.

WHAT SHOULD STUDENTS FOCUS ON IN THE HISTORY SECTION?

History can be one of the most scoring sections if approached strategically.

Rather than focusing only on memorising dates, students should concentrate on understanding the causes, processes and outcomes of major historical events. Key areas of focus include:

  • Ideologies such as liberalism and conservatism
  • Processes of national unification
  • Socio-economic impacts of global changes

The chapter Nationalism in India remains particularly important for the board exam.

Students should also pay attention to visual sources and images found in NCERT, such as representations of Germania and Marianne, along with caricatures, book covers and illustrations. Questions are frequently framed from captions, source boxes and picture interpretations.

HOW CAN MAPS MAKE GEOGRAPHY EASIER TO REVISE?

Teachers emphasise that maps are one of the most effective tools for preparing for Geography.

Instead of rote learning, students should link chapters such as:

  • Agriculture
  • Minerals and Energy Resources
  • Manufacturing Industries
  • Lifelines of the National Economy

HOW IMPORTANT IS MAP WORK IN THE SST BOARD EXAM?

Map work carries five compulsory marks every year.

  • 2 marks from History (usually from Nationalism in India)
  • 3 marks from Geography

While the weightage remains the same, teachers note that Lifelines of the National Economy is now largely tested through map-based questions.

Regular practice is essential. Students should focus on:

  • Correct symbols
  • Accurate location marking
  • Neat labelling

Even well-prepared students sometimes lose marks due to careless mistakes.

HOW CAN STUDENTS APPROACH POLITICAL SCIENCE QUESTIONS?

Political Science increasingly tests the application of democratic concepts in real-life situations.

High-weightage chapters include:

  • Power Sharing
  • Federalism
  • Political Parties
  • Gender, Religion and Caste

Reading NCERT carefully and practising case-based questions can help students connect ideas such as decentralisation, accountability and democratic outcomes with everyday examples.

WHAT IS THE BEST STRATEGY FOR SCORING WELL IN ECONOMICS?

Economics requires strong conceptual clarity rather than memorisation.

Important chapters include:

  • Development
  • Sectors of the Indian Economy
  • Money and Credit
  • Globalisation

Students should focus on definitions, comparisons, examples, tables and graphs related to income, employment and economic indicators.

HOW CAN THE IPEC FORMAT HELP SCORE FULL MARKS IN 5-MARK ANSWERS?

Teachers recommend the IPEC answer format for long answers.

According to Puja and Krittika Verma, Social Science faculty at Satya School, Gurugram, the IPEC format helps make answers structured and examiner-friendly.

The format includes:

  • I – Introduction: A short 2–3 line introduction explaining the concept
  • P – Points: Four clearly explained points written in bullet format
  • E – Explanation: Each point should include a brief explanation or example
  • C – Conclusion: A one-line concluding statement summarising the answer

Students should underline NCERT keywords and keep answers concise.

HOW DOES THE T-T LINK TRICK WORK FOR ASSERTION-REASON QUESTIONS?

Assertion-Reason questions can be tricky, but teachers recommend a simple strategy called T-T Link.

The steps include:

1. Check whether the Assertion is True or False
2. Check whether the Reason is True or False
3. See if the Reason correctly explains the Assertion

This method helps students eliminate incorrect options systematically.

WHAT STRATEGIES WORK BEST FOR MCQS AND SOURCE-BASED QUESTIONS?

Teachers suggest using smart elimination techniques.

According to Puja and Krittika Verma, students can improve their chances of selecting the correct MCQ answer by eliminating two incorrect options first.

Additional tips include:

  • Watch for extreme words such as only and always in statement-based questions
  • Read source-based passages twice and answer using keywords from the passage
  • Identify the event and significance in picture-based questions.

WHAT LAST-MINUTE REVISION TIPS DO TEACHERS RECOMMEND?

Class 10 Social Science teacher Pallavi Sharma advises students to focus on understanding rather than memorising.

“Do not only memorise. Try to clearly understand concepts like democracy, resources and nationalism,” says Pallavi Sharma.

She recommends that students:

  1. Practise locating agricultural regions, minerals and industries on the India map
  2. Revise important facts, definitions and examples
  3. Solvethe previous year’s question papers
  4. Watch official CBSE revision videos for updates

Teachers also suggest following the RPP method – Revise, Practice, Polish.

This means revising key concepts, solving at least one sample paper under timed conditions, and analysing mistakes before the exam.

The CBSE Class 10 Social Science exam is no longer just about remembering dates or definitions. The board is increasingly emphasising conceptual clarity, analytical thinking and real-world application of knowledge.

Students who combine NCERT-based revision, structured answer writing using the I.P.E.C format, regular map practice and smart techniques like the T-T Link trick will be better prepared to tackle the exam confidently.

Most importantly, teachers remind students that preparation works best with a calm and well-rested mind. Adequate sleep, short breaks and steady revision can make the final days before the exam far more productive-and help students walk into the examination hall with confidence.
