‘India no longer linked to violent crimes’; Canadian govt ahead of Mark Carney’s visit to India

Mark Carney’s India Visit: Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is set to begin his visit to India starting from Thursday. The meeting between the two leaders is being seen as a significant reset in bilateral relations between India and Canada.

This development comes as Canada has changed it’s stance on India after Mark carney became Canada’s 24th prime minister in 2025 upon which Canadian government issues statement saying, ‘India is no longer linked to violent crimes’.

The visit between the two countries marks the first official trip to India by Canadian prime minister since relations between both the nations deteriorated under the previous administration, pointing to a fresh effort now to steady relations and deepen diplomatic as well as economic cooperation.

Business Diplomacy to take centre stage in Mumbai

According to a statement issued by the Canadian Prime Minister’s Office, Carney will commence his India tour in Mumbai, where he is expected to meet leading business figures.

Later he will subsequently travel to national capital for further high level discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on March 2.

Focus on Trade, Technology and Strategic Cooperation

The leaders are expected to work toward broadening and upgrading the Canada-India partnership, with plans to pursue ambitious collaborations across trade, energy, technology and artificial intelligence (AI), talent, culture and defence. During the visit, he will also hold discussions with business leaders to explore fresh investment avenues in Canada and encourage stronger commercial ties between companies from both countries, the statement issued on Monday said.

It further highlighted Canada’s economic advantages, stating, “Canada offers what the world is seeking — vast energy resources, critical minerals, technological expertise and highly skilled talent. In a rapidly evolving global landscape, we are building on our strengths, expanding our trade networks and forging deeper international partnerships to secure Canada’s future.”

In a statement issued, Canadian PMO also highlighted that India remains the fastest-growing major economy in the world and a key force in global trade and technology. In 2024, it ranked as Canada’s seventh-largest trading partner in goods and services, with bilateral trade totalling $30.8 billion.

Pm Modi-Mark Carney last meet

In an official press release, the Government of Canada stated, “This marks the fifth meeting between the ministers since September 2025, reflecting the growing momentum in the Canada-India relationship, building on more than 75 years of diplomatic relations and strong people-to-people ties. The ministers discussed deepening cooperation in several areas, including energy, technology, and trade.”

PM Modi has also met Carney on the sidelines of the G20 Summit in Johannesburg last November, where he noted that India has set a target of 50 billion USD by 2030 for bilateral trade between the two countries.
