I can charge much more: Trump imposes new 10% global tariff after Supreme Court blow

US President Donald Trump announced he will impose a fresh 10% global tariff under a different legal authority, escalating his trade agenda days after the Supreme Court of the United States struck down his earlier sweeping import duties.

“Today, I will sign an order to impose a 10% global tariff under Section 122, over and above our normal tariffs already being charged,” Trump said, signaling a new strategy to bypass the legal setback.

Trump said the 10% global tariff will remain in effect for about five months.

“During that period of about five months, we are doing the various investigation necessary to put fair tariffs, or tariffs period, on other countries,” Trump told reporters.

Asked whether the duties would last only 150 days or continue indefinitely, the US president said, “We have a right to do pretty much what we want to do, but we’re going to charge it starting effectively. I think it’s three days from now.”

The move comes after the court’s 6-3 ruling invalidated his use of the International Emergency Economic Powers Act to impose tariffs without congressional approval. Trump has sharply criticised that decision, calling it “deeply disappointing” and saying he was “ashamed of certain members of the court.”

I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT

Trump argued that the ruling limits tariff collection but leaves broader executive powers intact.

“I can destroy the trade, I can destroy the country. I’m even allowed to impose a foreign country-destroying embargo. I can embargo. I can do anything I want, but I can’t charge $1 because that’s not what it says,” he said. “How ridiculous is that?”

He quoted Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s dissent in the 6-3 decision, noting that it suggested the ruling may not significantly constrain future presidential tariff authority. “He’s right. In fact, I can charge much more than I was charging,” Trump said.

The three dissenting justices were Kavanaugh and two other conservatives.
