From B-2 bombers to 200 Tomahawks: How Iran strikes racked up a $5 billion bill

The United States’ ongoing military campaign against Iran, known as Operation Epic Fury, has already cost American taxpayers billions of dollars, according to defense data and independent economic analyses.

As the conflict enters its fifth day, the financial toll is rapidly mounting due to large-scale airstrikes, naval deployments, and the sustained cost of maintaining high-intensity combat operations in the region.

OPENING STRIKES CARRIED MASSIVE PRICE TAG

The first 24 hours of the operation alone cost an estimated $779 million, reflecting the scale of the initial bombardment.

The opening wave included the deployment of B-2 stealth bombers, the launch of about 200 Tomahawk cruise missiles, and extensive fighter jet sorties targeting Iranian military infrastructure.

PRE-STRIKE MOBILIZATION ADDED HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS

Even before the first missiles were fired, the Pentagon had already spent heavily preparing for the operation.

The pre-strike military buildup, including repositioning more than a dozen naval vessels and deploying two aircraft carrier strike groups, such as the USS Gerald R. Ford, is estimated to have cost about $630 million.

These preparations included moving ships and aircraft into strategic positions across the region and increasing logistical support for combat operations.

DAILY COMBAT OPERATIONS COST NEARLY $60 MILLION

Since the strikes began, maintaining the pace of military activity has added significant daily expenses.

Operating the deployed naval fleets and more than 200 military aircraft involved in the mission is currently costing roughly $59.4 million to $60 million per day, according to defense estimates.

These ongoing costs include fuel, maintenance, munitions, personnel support, and operational logistics.

EARLY ESTIMATES ALREADY EXCEED $5 BILLION

When combining the initial bombardment, pre-strike mobilization, and early operational costs, analysts at the Center for American Progress estimate the total price tag has already exceeded $5 billion within the first few days of the campaign.

The figure could rise quickly if the intensity of operations continues.

ECONOMIC IMPACT COULD REACH $210 BILLION

Economists warn the broader financial consequences could be far greater if the conflict drags on.

Experts from the Penn Wharton Budget Model estimate that if the war extends for a month or longer, direct military spending and wider economic disruptions could drain up to $210 billion from the US economy.

That projection includes higher defense spending, increased energy market volatility, and potential disruptions to global trade.
