Enraged as friend left alcohol party for card game: Indian man on trial in Australia for stabbing stranger to death in 2024

Two brothers from Haryana, India were arrested in 2024 for stabbing another Indian student to death in Australia. The trial in the case began this week as the court was told that one of the accused was so enraged when his housemate left his party to play cards with his friends, that he stabbed a stranger to death.

Robin and Abhijeet are the accused of murdering Navjeet Singh Sandhu. And the friend who left the brothers’ party was their roommate Sharwan Singh.

According to Australian media reports, the jury was told on the first day of the trial that two brothers held a party with five bottles of whiskey to celebrate their purchase of a new car. But their roommate Sharwan left the party and went to Sandhu’s home where a group of friends was playing cards — without alcohol.

Robin repeatedly called Singh and threatened to throw his belongings onto the street if he didn’t return. Singh was with Sandhu at that time and Sandhu offered Singh a lift to get his things. When they arrived where the liquor party was going on, they saw Robin was pacing out the front with a knife.

A brawl broke out, which was also caught on camera. Both Sandhu and Singh were stabbed and while Sandhu died at the scene from stab wounds, Singh was taken to a hospital where he was treated for a collapsed lung.

Robin immediately took hold of his belongings including his passport and asked his brother Abhijeet to run with him. He also told Abhijeet that he stabbed Sandhu but he did not remember where he got the knife. They fled the scene as the cops arrived and were on their way to a Sikh temple in Carrick when they were arrested. An interstate manhunt was launched to nab them.

Robin has pleaded not guilty, facing alternative charges of intentionally causing serious injury and recklessly causing serious injury in relation to Shawan Singh’s injuries.
