Seven Electronics Component Projects Worth Rs 5,532 Crore Approved, Creating 5,195 Jobs
Seven major electronics component manufacturing projects worth Rs 5,532 crore have received approval under the government’s Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme (ECMS), marking a significant boost to India’s domestic manufacturing capabilities. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the approvals, which are expected to generate Rs 44,406 crore in output and create over 5,000 new jobs nationwide.
Key Takeaways
- Seven projects approved under ECMS with Rs 5,532 crore investment
- Expected to create 5,195 new jobs across multiple states
- Projected output of Rs 44,406 crore from these projects
- Focus on critical components for smartphones, automobiles, telecom and medical devices
Strengthening Domestic Electronics Value Chain
The approved projects will support large-scale manufacturing of essential components including camera module sub-assemblies, multi-layer printed circuit boards (PCBs), high-density interconnect PCBs, copper clad laminates, and polypropylene films. These components are vital for communication, transport, defence, and healthcare devices.
The manufacturing facilities will be established across Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh, creating regional manufacturing clusters and supporting the government’s initiative.
ECMS Scheme Overview
Launched on April 8 with an outlay of Rs 22,919 crore, the Electronics Component Manufacturing Scheme aims to build a self-sustaining ecosystem for component manufacturing. The six-year scheme includes an additional one-year gestation period and is designed to attract both Indian and global investors while promoting higher domestic value addition.
Exceeding Investment Targets
As of September 30, investment commitments under ECMS have reached Rs 1.15 lakh crore – nearly double the original target of Rs 59,350 crore. The government estimates the scheme will generate production worth Rs 10.34 lakh crore and create 1.41 lakh direct jobs, significantly exceeding initial projections.
India’s Electronics Sector Growth
India’s electronics sector has demonstrated remarkable expansion over the past decade. Electronics have risen to become the country’s third-largest export category in 2024-25, climbing from seventh position in 2021-22.
Sector production has surged from Rs 1.9 lakh crore in 2014-15 to Rs 11.3 lakh crore in 2024-25, while exports jumped from Rs 38,000 crore to Rs 3.27 lakh crore during the same period. Mobile phone manufacturing has been a major contributor, with production increasing 28 times to reach Rs 5.45 lakh crore in 2024-25.
