Pokémon Pokopia free download: Nintendo Switch Online users can unlock these icons for a limited time before 18 March

Nintendo’s latest Pokémon spin-off, Pokémon Pokopia, seems to be enjoying a surprisingly strong moment. The cosy life-simulation game, set in a ruined version of the Kanto region, has quickly attracted both critics and players. Sales numbers suggest the enthusiasm is real, with millions of copies reportedly sold just days after release. For fans already spending time inside the game’s peaceful but mysterious world, Nintendo has added a small bonus outside the game itself.

Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can now download special Pokopia-themed profile icons. These are part of a rotating promotion tied to the game’s launch. The catch is timing.

Each wave of icons only lasts about a week before being replaced by the next batch. The current set, featuring two characters many fans already recognise, disappears on 18 March. Miss the window, and they’re gone. For collectors, that ticking clock might feel a little stressful.

Nintendo Switch Online launches rotating Pokémon Pokopia icons

The icon promotion quietly began earlier this month. It started on 4 March, when the first batch appeared inside the Nintendo Switch Online reward system.

Players could redeem profile icons based on characters from Pokémon Pokopia. Nothing complicated. Just a small cosmetic item for your profile. But the icons rotate weekly. That means new designs arrive while older ones disappear. The current wave launched on 11 March, and it includes icons based on Professor Tangrowth and the oddly named Peakychu, a pale variant of Pikachu that reportedly comes with some tragic backstory in the game’s lore.

Fans seem particularly interested in Peakychu. Maybe because it looks different. Maybe because the story behind it feels a little darker than typical Pokémon designs. Either way, this second wave will only remain available until 18 March.

How players can claim free Pokémon Pokopia icons

The process appears pretty simple. Players don’t even need to own Pokémon Pokopia. That part might surprise some people. All that’s required is an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Once logged in, players can open the Nintendo Switch Online app and head into the Missions and Rewards section. From there, the Pokopia icons should appear in the reward list.

Each icon costs 10 Platinum Points, which most players probably already have. These points build up naturally just by using Nintendo services or completing small missions. For regular Switch users, claiming the icons might take less than a minute.

Nintendo is releasing the Pokopia icons in four waves

Nintendo seems to be rolling the icons out in four waves.

The first one is already gone. Anyone who missed it probably noticed the rewards disappearing earlier this week. The remaining waves follow a fairly tight schedule that runs through early April.

Wave 1 ran from 4 March to 11 March.

Wave 2 — the one currently active — runs from 11 March to 18 March.

Wave 3 begins on 18 March and lasts until 26 March. This wave is expected to introduce icons based on characters like Mosslax, which some players are already curious about. Wave 4 launches 25 March and remains available until 1 April, bringing icons themed around Smearguru, another creature that seems to be drawing attention among fans.

Pokémon Pokopia’s early success surprises many fans

Pokémon Pokopia appears to be off to an impressive start commercially. Nintendo reportedly confirmed that the game sold more than 2.2 million copies in its first four days. Over a million of those sales happened in Japan alone. Some analysts say the numbers might keep climbing once more players manage to get their hands on the Nintendo Switch 2, since the game is exclusive to the new console.

Critically, the game has also been receiving unusually strong reviews for a Pokémon title. Early review scores on Metacritic suggest it could be the highest-rated Pokémon game so far, which is something longtime fans didn’t necessarily expect.

Nintendo is introducing new Pokémon through events

Outside the icon promotion, the game itself is also running events. One of them, called More Spores for Hoppip, is currently active. The event focuses on Pokémon like Hoppip, Skiploom, and Jumpluff. It runs until 25 March, giving players a limited chance to encounter these creatures. Another event is already scheduled for later in the spring.

From 29 April to 14 May, the game will feature Sableye in a similar event. Interestingly, these Pokémon aren’t available in the base version of the game, which means events might become a regular way for developers to introduce new content.
