Anthropic CEO Meets PM Modi, Announces Bengaluru Office as Claude Code Usage Soars 5x

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, announcing the AI company’s first Indian office in Bengaluru to open by early 2026. The meeting highlighted India’s surging AI adoption, with Claude Code usage increasing fivefold since June.

Key Developments

  • Claude Code usage in India has grown 5x since June 2024
  • First Indian office to open in Bengaluru by early 2026
  • India ranks second globally in Claude AI usage
  • Multi-language support coming for 9 Indian languages

PM Modi’s Vision for AI in India

Prime Minister Modi emphasized India’s human-centric approach to AI development during the meeting. He highlighted the country’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth as key drivers of responsible AI innovation.

“India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation that is human-centric and responsible. We welcome Anthropic’s expansion and look forward to working together to harness AI for growth across key sectors,” PM Modi tweeted.

Anthropic’s Commitment to India

After the meeting, Amodei praised India’s proactive AI policies and emphasized the country’s critical role in shaping AI’s future. He noted that how India deploys AI across sectors affecting over a billion people will be essential for global AI development.

“Today I met with PM @narendramodi to discuss Anthropic’s expansion to India–where Claude Code use is up 5x since June. How India deploys AI across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion people will be essential in shaping the future of AI,” Amodei stated.

Bengaluru: AI Hub of India

Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge confirmed Bengaluru’s selection for Anthropic’s first Indian office, noting the city ranks fifth globally in AI and DeepTech ecosystems. Bengaluru hosts over 100,000 AI professionals, representing 50% of India’s AI talent pool.

Major Indian companies including CRED have already integrated Claude Code into their workflows. Anthropic plans to expand language support to include Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu.

India’s Growing AI Landscape

India currently ranks second globally in Claude AI usage, with significant application in technical and programming tasks including mobile UI development and web app debugging. The country follows the United States in global usage rankings.

This development comes as OpenAI also identified India as its second-largest market, introducing affordable ChatGPT plans earlier this year. With Anthropic’s entry, India’s AI infrastructure is poised for strengthened global partnerships and local development.
