Google Quick Share Bug Disrupts Wi-Fi on Pixel Devices

Key Takeaways

  • Google’s Quick Share update enabling AirDrop support is causing Wi-Fi connectivity issues on Pixel devices
  • Users report complete Wi-Fi disconnection when opening the Quick Share menu
  • Google’s support teams are redirecting users between different platforms without providing a clear solution

Google’s newly launched Quick Share feature with Apple AirDrop compatibility is facing significant technical issues, with multiple users reporting Wi-Fi connectivity problems immediately after installation.

The cross-platform file sharing feature, which allows Android and iPhone users to share files seamlessly, appears to have a serious bug that disrupts Wi-Fi functionality on affected devices.

User Reports Highlight Wi-Fi Disruption

The issue was first flagged by a user named JayMZ on Google’s support forum. According to their report, updating to the latest Quick Share extension caused their Pixel 10 to lose Wi-Fi connection as soon as they opened the Quick Share sharing menu.

“It will not only disconnect me from my Wifi, but if I enter the Wifi menu while the QuickShare menu is still open, the list of networks is completely empty as if nothing was there,” JayMZ wrote. “If I switch Wifi off and on with the QuickShare menu still open, only my home network will show up in the list, but I can’t connect to it.”

The user confirmed that Wi-Fi functionality returned to normal only after removing the Quick Share update.

Multiple Users Confirm the Bug

Other Android users have experienced identical problems. On Reddit discussions, one user stated, “Experiencing the same issue,” while another commented, “It’s clearly a software bug. I just installed the extension update and it happens with me as well.”

The widespread nature of these reports suggests this isn’t an isolated incident affecting only specific device configurations.

Google’s Support Response

The bug was officially submitted to Google’s IssueTracker on November 22 but was closed the same day without resolution. IssueTracker engineers redirected users to Google’s support forum, while the support forum team subsequently directed affected users back to IssueTracker.

This circular support process indicates Google is aware of the problem but hasn’t provided a clear timeline for a fix. The company had previously emphasized extensive security testing for the Quick Share feature, including threat modeling and penetration testing conducted with independent security experts.
