X Removes 1.7 Million Bots in Major Spam Cleanup Operation

Elon Musk’s X platform has removed approximately 1.7 million bot accounts in one of its largest-ever spam cleanup operations.

Key Takeaways

  • X removed 1.7 million bots engaging in reply spam
  • Direct message spam is the next target in the anti-spam campaign
  • Platform testing new AI moderation tools and link-sharing features
  • Cleanup aims to restore authentic user interactions

The massive bot removal targets accounts that were flooding reply sections with promotional links, scams, and irrelevant content. X’s Head of Product Nikita Bier confirmed the purge, stating users should notice improvements in platform engagement.

“This week we purged 1.7 million bots engaging in reply spam. You should start noticing improvements in the coming days,” Bier wrote on X.

Direct Message Spam Next in Line

Following the reply section cleanup, X is shifting focus to combat spam in direct messages. The company identified DMs as another significant hotspot for bot activity.

Bier indicated the next phase will target bots flooding user inboxes with unsolicited messages. The platform is also testing new link-sharing features and AI-driven moderation tools to enhance safety and usability.

Significance of the Cleanup

This represents one of the largest spam removals in X’s history, signaling Musk’s commitment to creating a more secure and user-friendly environment. With over 1.7 million fake accounts eliminated, users can expect cleaner conversations and more authentic interactions across the platform.

The cleanup addresses growing user complaints about automated accounts hijacking discussions with promotional content and scams.
