Vodafone Idea Shares Fall 12% After Supreme Court AGR Dues Order

Vodafone Idea Shares Drop 12% After Supreme Court’s AGR Dues Order

Vodafone Idea shares plunged as much as 12% on Thursday after the Supreme Court permitted the government to reassess the telecom operator’s adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues. The stock later recovered slightly but remained under pressure, trading at Rs 8.79, down 6.09%.

Key Takeaways

  • Supreme Court allows reassessment of Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues
  • Stock fell 12% intraday before partial recovery
  • Order applies only to incremental dues up to FY2016-17
  • Government holds 49% stake in the telecom company

Sector-Wide Impact

The court order triggered a broader telecom sector selloff. Indus Towers dropped 3.3%, Bharti Airtel fell 1.5%, and Bharti Hexacom declined 2.71% to Rs 1,866 per share.

Court Order Details

The Supreme Court’s written judgment, dated October 29, specifically applies only to Vodafone Idea and covers incremental AGR dues up to financial year 2016-17. The court cited “peculiar facts and circumstances” for this limited scope.

This comes after the apex court’s October 27 oral order allowing the Centre to reconsider the dues. Interestingly, Vodafone Idea had reached a one-year high of Rs 10.57 on October 27 amid expectations of government relief, having gained 3.5% in 2025 until that point.

Analyst Views and Government Stance

Market analysts noted that the Supreme Court order addresses only the incremental AGR demand, which depends entirely on government policy. They emphasized that without substantial policy relief, Vodafone Idea’s stock performance won’t improve significantly.

Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia stated on October 29 that the government will analyze the order’s implications and await Vodafone Idea’s formal relief application before making policy decisions.

Public Interest Considerations

The Supreme Court highlighted that the Centre now holds 49% equity in Vodafone Idea, and approximately 20 crore customers rely on its services, making this a matter of significant public interest.

Fresh AGR Demand

Vodafone Idea’s latest petition revealed a new AGR demand of Rs 9,450 crore from the Department of Telecommunications. The company argued that a substantial portion of this demand relates to the pre-2017 period, which had already been settled by the Supreme Court in previous rulings.
