“UFC is like NFL or NBA of combat sports”: Israel Adesanya urges Dana White not to forget MMA roots amid focus on Zuffa Boxing

Former UFC middleweight champion Israel Adesanya has sent a message to Dana White as the UFC boss expands into the boxing world. White recently launched Zuffa Boxing and has started signing big names from the sport. While Adesanya respects White’s ambition, he believes the UFC president should remember that mixed martial arts made him successful. The Nigerian-New Zealand fighter said he understands White’s desire to explore new challenges but hopes the focus on boxing does not take attention away from MMA.

The conversation has gained attention among fans and fighters. Some supporters believe White has become distracted since launching the new boxing venture.

The situation became more controversial after British boxer Conor Benn reportedly received a $15 million payday for a single fight despite never competing for a world title. Adesanya, however, said he respects White’s competitive mindset but reminded him that the UFC and MMA built his reputation and legacy in combat sports.

Israel Adesanya believes UFC is not that challenging for Dana White like Zuffa Boxing

Israel Adesanya spoke openly about the topic during a recent video on his YouTube channel.

The former two-time middleweight champion said it is natural for someone like Dana White to look for new challenges after achieving huge success in one field.

Adesanya explained that after spending many years building a sport, people often want something fresh to keep themselves motivated. He said White already helped turn the UFC into the biggest promotion in combat sports, similar to how the NFL and NBA dominate their own industries. According to Adesanya, White now appears eager to repeat that achievement in boxing through Zuffa Boxing.

The 35-year-old praised White for transforming the UFC into a global powerhouse valued at more than $7 billion. He said it was impressive because White entered the sport when many people did not believe MMA would succeed. Adesanya described that journey as inspiring and said it proved how determined White is when he takes on a challenge.

However, Adesanya also added a gentle reminder. He said while the new boxing venture may excite White, it is important not to forget the sport that created his legacy. The middleweight star stressed that MMA and the UFC are what made White the influential figure he is today.

Meanwhile, Adesanya is preparing for his return to the octagon. His last fight ended in a first-round knockout defeat to Nassourdine Imavov at UFC Saudi Arabia in February 2025. Adesanya will now headline UFC Seattle on March 28 against Joe Pyfer at the Climate Pledge Arena.
