Some things never change: South Africa crumble under semifinal pressure once again

South Africa’s batting collapse in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal against New Zealand sparked a wave of reaction on social media, with fans quick to point out that the Proteas had once again failed to deliver when it mattered most.

Having gone through the tournament unbeaten, many had tipped this Proteas side as favourites to go all the way. But a familiar story unfolded at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Wednesday, as New Zealand dismantled their batting lineup to leave fans exasperated.

Fans on X Vent Their Frustration

The reaction on X was swift and ruthless. One fan summed up the mood perfectly, writing that South Africa do not just lose but perform a masterpiece in self-destruction. Others were more sympathetic, insisting that the Proteas would not give up without a fight.

With the match still in the balance, one fan suggested that a total of 160 on this pitch would be competitive. Another struck a more bullish tone, arguing that if South Africa could defend their total at Kolkata, they would be worthy champions.

The optimism, however, was in short supply as the innings wore on.

Others were already looking beyond the semifinal entirely. Some fans questioned whether a repeat of the 2024 final between India and South Africa was even possible, with results elsewhere throwing the other semifinal wide open.

Another Day, Another Collapse

On the pitch, the collapse was hard to watch for Proteas supporters. Cole McConchie set the tone early, striking twice in his opening over to remove Quinton de Kock and Ryan Rickelton in quick succession. South Africa were in trouble before they had even found their footing.

It got worse from there. Aiden Markram and David Miller both fell to Rachin Ravindra, leaving the Proteas reeling in the powerplay. Dewald Brevis, who briefly looked capable of steadying the ship, was also dismissed before he could make a meaningful contribution.

Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen offered some much-needed resistance. The pair put on a 73-run partnership that gave South Africa hope of posting a competitive total. But Stubbs was cleaned up by a sharp Lockie Ferguson yorker with two overs remaining, ending that partnership and with it, South Africa’s best chance of recovery.

South Africa have never beaten New Zealand in an ICC knockout match. On this evidence, that unwanted record looks set to remain intact.
