Maguire Header Ends United’s Anfield Drought in Dramatic 2-1 Win

Maguire’s Late Header Ends United’s Anfield Drought in Dramatic 2-1 Win

Harry Maguire powered home an 84th-minute header to give Manchester United a thrilling 2-1 victory over Liverpool at Anfield, ending their nine-year winless streak at the stadium and dealing a significant blow to Liverpool’s title hopes.

Key Takeaways

  • Manchester United end nine-year Anfield drought with dramatic 2-1 win
  • Liverpool suffer fourth consecutive defeat across all competitions
  • Aston Villa complete impressive 2-1 comeback victory at Tottenham
  • Morgan Rogers continues impressive form with stunning equalizer

Premier League Drama at Anfield

Manchester United’s Bryan Mbeumo stunned the home crowd with a goal just one minute after kick-off. Amad Diallo created the opportunity with a clever flick that sent Mbeumo through to fire home from inside the box.

Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo hit the woodwork three times before finally equalizing in the 78th minute, tapping in Federico Chiesa’s cross. But Maguire had the final say, connecting with Bruno Fernandes’ floated cross to head home the dramatic winner six minutes later.

The result sees Liverpool drop to fourth in the table with 15 points, while United climbed to ninth with 13 points after securing back-to-back league victories for the first time under manager Ruben Amorim.

Villa’s Impressive Comeback at Tottenham

Emiliano Buendia came off the bench to secure Aston Villa a impressive 2-1 comeback victory at Tottenham Hotspur, completing their recovery after Morgan Rogers’ spectacular equalizer.

Tottenham started strongly with Rodrigo Bentancur scoring from close range after just five minutes, converting after Joao Palhinha headed back Mohammed Kudus’ deep cross.

Villa, arriving in north London on a seven-match unbeaten run, leveled in the 37th minute when England midfielder Rogers unleashed a dipping right-foot shot from the edge of the area that flew past goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario.

Both teams created chances after halftime, but Villa looked more dangerous and secured all three points when substitute Buendia curled a low shot into the far corner in front of the joyous visiting supporters.

The victory extends Villa’s winning streak to five matches, moving them to 10th in the table with 12 points. Tottenham’s second league loss of the season leaves them in sixth position, behind Chelsea on goal difference.

It proved a disappointing afternoon for Tottenham, who would have moved to second in the standings with a victory. Despite strong starts to both halves, they faded noticeably and lacked creativity as the match progressed.
