Edoardo Mortara surges past Oliver Rowland in Formula E Drivers’ Standings after double poles, two podiums

There is something special about Edoardo Mortara this season. His consistent performances have propelled him into the top tier of the Formula E Drivers’ Standings. The Mahindra Racing driver sits second with 62 points, just six behind current championship leader Pascal Wehrlein. Mortara moved ahead of Oliver Rowland in the standings after securing back-to-back pole positions in Jeddah, converting one of them into a podium finish. It marked his second podium of the season, following another strong result in Mexico City. After his podium in Jeddah, Mortara reflected on the team’s steady progress over the past few years.

Edoardo Mortara on converting pole into a podium in Jeddah

Edoardo Mortara delivered an impressive performance in Jeddah, claiming two consecutive poles for Mahindra Racing during the doubleheader weekend, a first for the team. He converted one pole into a second-place finish in Round 4 and narrowly missed another podium in Round 5, finishing fourth.

Addressing the chaotic start in Round 4, where he briefly dropped positions before recovering to finish P2, Mortara said, “The incident at the start must have been nice for the cameras! I lost five places, and I’ll have to look at the data to understand what happened. It wasn’t a nice moment with so many cars around me banging doors.

It got better after that! The team has done a tremendous job, especially on starts, since the beginning of the year. Today’s start wasn’t ideal, but it’s not the end of the world, and we still finished P2. ”

Edoardo Mortara on ending Mahindra Racing’s pole drought

Edoardo Mortara was visibly pleased after delivering Mahindra Racing’s first pole since Berlin in 2024. Speaking after Round 4 qualifying, he told FormulaE. com, “I pushed everything I had, probably slightly too much in the first sector where I made some small mistakes. Luckily for us, it was enough. I was giving my very best today. I’m glad we secured the first pole for Mahindra since Berlin in 2024. ”

He further said, “I joined the team at the beginning of Season 10, and we knew we had a lot of work ahead of us to develop the car and improve our operations. The team has done a fantastic job over the last three years. Obviously, it’s only qualifying, and it went very well for us. We still have a big task ahead for the race. Nevertheless, we’re improving race by race, showing that we’re competitive, and that’s great. I felt confident in qualifying today, not so much in free practice, but thanks to the engineers, we made the right setup changes, and I felt very comfortable in the car from the start of the group sessions.

Mortara’s back-to-back poles at a doubleheader marked the first such achievement in Formula E after two seasons. The previous driver to accomplish the feat was Maximilian Gunther in Jakarta in 2023.
