Nobel Prize 2025: Swedish Academy to announce Chemistry award today

The scientific world is abuzz as the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry prepares to step into the spotlight this Wednesday, following major announcements in medicine and physics earlier in the week.

The prize, awarded by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences and considered the highest honour in the field, will be revealed in Stockholm on October 8, 2025.

This annual award celebrates transformative achievements that have advanced the frontiers of chemical science and moved society forward.

WATCH 2025 NOBEL PRIZE IN CHEMISTRY LIVE

Last year’s Chemistry Nobel recognised breakthroughs in computational protein design and protein structure prediction, fields that have spurred innovation in medicine and biotechnology.

The community now eagerly awaits to see which area of chemistry will be honoured in 2025, with contenders ranging from materials science to green chemistry and molecular engineering.

Following tradition, the Chemistry award announcement comes after the Medicine and Physics laureates have been revealed. On Monday, October 6, the Nobel in Physiology or Medicine went to Mary Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell, and Shimon Sakaguchi for discoveries about immune regulation.

Tuesday saw physicists John Clarke, Michel Devoret, and John Martinis acknowledged for their pioneering work demonstrating quantum phenomena in electronic circuits. Now, attention turns to chemistry, where speculation is intense and the field’s sheer breadth means the prize could go to scientists working on anything from energy storage to sustainable synthesis methods.

Winners of the Nobel Prize receive a gold medal, a diploma, and a significant cash award valued at 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1.17 million). The formal Nobel Prize ceremony takes place on December 10 each year, commemorating the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

Chemistry is one of the original categories established by Alfred Nobel’s will in 1895, alongside physics, medicine, literature, and peace. For more than a century, the Chemistry Nobel has recognized not only landmark basic research but also practical feats that change daily life, from the discovery of penicillin to the lithium-ion battery.

This week, the world is watching to see who will join this illustrious list, as the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry is unveiled on Wednesday.
