Nobel Prize 2025 announcements to begin today with Medicine award

The world’s most prestigious scientific recognition returns this week as Nobel Prize season begins on Monday, with the announcement of the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

Over the next seven days, laureates across medicine, physics, chemistry, literature, peace, and economics will be revealed from Stockholm and Oslo, continuing a 124-year-old tradition of honouring breakthroughs that have changed our understanding of humanity and the universe.

The first award, for medicine, will be announced by the Nobel Assembly at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute.

The medicine award typically honours pathbreaking discoveries in medical science, from genetics and immunotherapy to virology and brain research.

In recent years, the medicine prize has recognised work that shaped global health responses, including mRNA vaccine technology in 2023 and gene-editing therapies in 2024. This year’s prize is again expected to spotlight transformative biomedical advancements with real-world impact, possibly in neuroscience, cancer immunology, or regenerative medicine.

UP AHEAD AFTER MEDICINE AWARD

Following Monday’s announcement, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences will reveal the Nobel Prizes in Physics on Tuesday and in Chemistry on Wednesday. These will likely highlight discoveries in fundamental science and emerging technologies such as quantum computing, materials research, or space physics — areas that have seen major breakthroughs in recent years.

Literature will be announced on Thursday, often sparking global debate with its celebration of authors who shape world culture and consciousness. On Friday, the Nobel Peace Prize from Oslo will draw intense global attention amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

The final prize, in Economic Sciences, will wrap up the announcements on Monday, October 13.

Each Nobel laureate receives a gold medal, a diploma, and a share of 11 million Swedish kronor (about USD 1 million). The official award ceremonies will take place on December 10, marking the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

As suspense builds, researchers, writers, and activists worldwide await the names that will join a legendary list of laureates — from Marie Curie to Amartya Sen, whose ideas continue to redefine the boundaries of human achievement.
