Not just Iran: Why Oman is crucial in the Strait of Hormuz

When people think about the Strait of Hormuz, they often imagine the narrow waterway between Iran and the Arabian Peninsula. But did you know that another country also occupies a key geographical position there?

That country is Oman.

This happens because of a small but striking piece of land called the Musandam Peninsula. Located at the northern tip of Oman, Musandam stretches into the Strait of Hormuz and forms part of the southern coastline of the strait.

Because of this unusual geography, Oman shares the entrance to the Persian Gulf with Iran on the opposite side.

The Musandam Peninsula is a rocky extension of the Arabian Peninsula located in the far north of Oman.

WHAT IS THE MUSANDAM PENINSULA?

The Musandam Peninsula is a rocky extension of the Arabian Peninsula located in the far north of Oman. Interestingly, it is separated from the rest of Oman by the United Arab Emirates, making it an exclave of the country.

The peninsula is mostly mountainous and forms the northern end of the Hajar mountain range. These mountains rise steeply from the sea and create a rugged coastline that looks very different from the flat deserts usually associated with Arabia.

Musandam is relatively narrow, about 35 kilometres wide, but its position is extremely important because it lies right at the mouth of the Persian Gulf.

WHY IS MUSANDAM’S COASTLINE SO UNUSUAL?

One of the most striking features of Musandam is its deeply cut coastline. The sea has carved narrow inlets into the mountains, forming long channels that resemble fjords.

Because of these dramatic landscapes, Musandam is sometimes called the ‘Norway of the Middle East’. Tall limestone mountains rise more than 2,000 metres above sea level, and steep cliffs drop directly into the blue waters of the strait.

These fjord-like inlets were created when valleys formed in the mountains and were later flooded by the sea. The result is a spectacular coastline filled with narrow bays and steep rocky cliffs.

WHY IS THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ IMPORTANT FOR OMAN?

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the most important sea passages in the world. It connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, allowing ships to travel between the Gulf and the wider oceans.

Because the Musandam Peninsula reaches into this strait, Oman has a direct coastline along the waterway. This gives the country a geographical presence in the narrow passage that links the Gulf to global shipping routes.

Another interesting fact is that most ships passing through the strait travel along the side that lies within Oman’s waters. This makes the Omani coast especially important for navigation through the area.

WHAT IS LIFE LIKE IN MUSANDAM?

Despite its dramatic scenery, Musandam is not heavily populated. Small coastal towns and villages lie along the bays and inlets.

The main town, Khasab, is an oasis where people traditionally depended on fishing and sea trade.

Because the mountains are steep and rugged, many settlements were historically connected mainly by boat. Even today, some remote villages like Kumzar in Oman along the fjords can only be reached by sea.

The landscape, however, has made Musandam famous for its natural beauty. The steep cliffs, calm bays and mountain scenery attract travellers who want to explore one of the most unusual coastlines in the Arabian Peninsula.
