Will Katrina Kaif and Ranbir Kapoor reunite for Raajneeti 2? Director reacts

Filmmaker Prakash Jha has confirmed that a sequel to the political drama Raajneeti is officially in development. Marking 15 years since the original film’s release, Jha revealed that he is currently working on Raajneeti 2, although the project remains in the early stages of pre-production.

In a recent interview with SCREEN, the director said he is “actively working on it,” signalling that the long-discussed sequel is moving forward. While fans have already begun speculating about the possible return of stars Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, Jha clarified that no casting or shooting details have been finalised yet.

What did Prakash Jha reveal about Raajneeti 2?

Speaking about the project, Jha said the idea for a sequel has existed for years, given the continuing relevance of political narratives.

“Raajneeti (politics) ki yatra toh anvarat hai, chalti hi rehti hai” (journey is ceaseless; it just keeps going on), he said, suggesting that political power struggles remain an enduring theme. The filmmaker added that while concrete decisions about casting and filming schedules have not yet been made, the script and conceptual groundwork are currently being developed.

His remarks indicate that the film is still in the planning phase rather than heading immediately into production.

Will the original cast return?

The original Raajneeti featured a large ensemble cast including Ajay Devgn, Nana Patekar, Manoj Bajpayee, Arjun Rampal, Naseeruddin Shah, and Sarah Thompson, alongside Kapoor and Kaif.

However, Jha has not confirmed whether any of the actors will reprise their roles in the sequel. Industry watchers note that several cast members are currently occupied with other major projects.

What about Ranbir Kapoor’s earlier comments on the film?

During the conversation, Jha also addressed Kapoor’s past remarks about being self-critical of his performance in the 2010 film.

According to the director, such reflection is natural for actors revisiting earlier work. He said that Kapoor delivered his best at the time and praised the actor’s ability to evaluate his performances thoughtfully.

The original Raajneeti drew inspiration from the Mahabharata, blending themes of power, family rivalry, and political ambition within a contemporary setting. Its success and cultural impact have kept audience interest alive in the possibility of a follow-up.
