Priyadarshan addresses delay reports, discord with Paresh Rawal

The production of the third film in the Hera Pheri series has faced a major setback as director Priyadarshan confirmed that filming will not take place this year. Legal complications over both film and music rights have caused a standstill, impacting the much-awaited continuation of the popular franchise.

In an interview with ETimes, Priyadarshan discussed the complex situation, stating, “Certain people said they have the rights to the film, while others claimed rights to the music.” He explained that these disputes need to be sorted before any progress can be made.

Bhushan Kumar has made a public claim to the music rights of Hera Pheri 3. Priyadarshan emphasised that resolving the ownership issues is crucial before moving ahead, adding that the film will “definitely not” begin production this year.

Further complicating the matter, Seven Arts International has alleged that Firoz Nadiadwala’s rights only covered the Hindi adaptation of the Malayalam original Ramji Rao Speaking, which became the first Hera Pheri film in 2000. The company claims the contract was breached by producing the sequel Phir Hera Pheri and by transferring franchise rights to Akshay Kumar’s Cape of Good Films.

The ongoing disputes have also influenced the cast. Actor Paresh Rawal had earlier left the project, prompting reports that Akshay Kumar filed a legal case seeking Rs 25 crore in damages. However, this issue was eventually resolved with Akshay dropping the case.

Priyadarshan addressed any suggestions of discord with Paresh Rawal, saying, “I’ve seen people fall out and then work together again. I don’t think there are permanent enemies in politics or cinema,” reflecting the fluid nature of professional relationships in the film industry.

The Hera Pheri franchise, which began in 2000, is known for its leading trio of Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, and Paresh Rawal. Its sequel, Phir Hera Pheri, followed in 2006. The third film aims to bring the same actors back together, under Priyadarshan’s direction.

Currently, all plans for Hera Pheri 3 remain on hold while the legal matters are addressed. The future of the franchise depends on the resolution of these ongoing disputes.
