Hyundai Launches Upgraded Venue SUV to Regain Market Share

Key Takeaways

  • Hyundai launches upgraded Venue SUV priced ₹7.9-9.1 lakh to regain market share
  • First major update in 3 years kicks off plan for 26 new models in 5 years
  • Venue was Hyundai’s second bestseller with 120,000 units sold in FY25

Hyundai Motor India has launched a comprehensively upgraded version of its Venue compact SUV, marking the model’s first major refresh in three years. Priced aggressively between ₹7.9 lakh and ₹9.1 lakh (ex-showroom), the new Venue aims to defend Hyundai’s market position against rivals like Tata Nexon, Maruti Brezza, and Mahindra XUV 3XO.

Strategic Launch Amid Market Pressure

The upgrade comes at a critical time for Hyundai, which has slipped to third position in the Indian automotive market. During the first nine months of 2025, Hyundai sold 425,330 units, trailing Mahindra’s 446,697 vehicles.

Tarun Garg, Hyundai’s Whole Time Director and COO, described the vehicle as “a next-generation car” with “excellent reviews, every way you look at it, whether it’s the exterior or interior.”

Expert Analysis: A Potential Game-Changer

Industry experts believe the timing could prove strategic for Hyundai. Puneet Gupta, Director at S&P Global Mobility, noted: “This model can be a game-changer for Hyundai as they needed a product intervention to drive sales in the market. More than the product itself, the timing of the launch is important as Hyundai is at its lows in terms of market share.”

He added that Hyundai needs to “bolster its presence in this sweet spot segment” as competition intensifies with evolving powertrain technologies.

Sales Context and Market Trends

Hyundai’s sales showed tepid growth in the months leading to the launch, with just 1% growth in September (51,547 units) and a 3.2% decline in October (53,792 units).

The company expects the new Venue to reverse this trend, particularly benefiting from recent GST cuts on sub-4-meter cars. According to Garg, “Consumers who are looking to buy a ₹6-10 lakh car want to upgrade from hatchbacks to these compact SUVs which provide space and comfort.”

Feature Upgrades and Target Audience

The new Venue comes packed with premium features including:

  • Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS)
  • Six airbags for enhanced safety
  • Connected car technology
  • Surround view monitor
  • Upgraded infotainment system

These features specifically target young buyers under 30 years, a key demographic in the growing compact SUV segment.

Market Performance and Export Plans

According to Autocar India data, the compact SUV segment grew 14% to 697,013 units in FY25, while hatchback sales declined 13% to approximately one million units.

The Venue will continue to be manufactured at Hyundai’s Talegaon facility and will be exported to over 30 countries, establishing India as the export hub for emerging markets.
