Seven years ago, it was a sweet, viral moment at a press conference. In 2026, it suddenly feels like destiny unfolding in real time. Izyan ‘Zizou’ Ahmad, now 15, has been handed a qualifying wildcard into the Indian Wells Open, one of the biggest stops on the tennis calendar. For tennis fans who remember a fearless seven-year-old boldly negotiating with Roger Federer, this is more than just junior success. It is the next chapter of a story that began with a pinky promise and a grin. Seven-year-old’s question to Roger Federer turns into full-circle tennis moment
Back in 2017, during the #NextGenerationKidcaster event, Ahmad grabbed the mic and looked straight at his idol. “You have been the most consistent player of all time. Can you please continue to play for another eight or nine years so I can play you when I go pro,” he said. Federer, amused and clearly charmed, played along. “Yes. If you make it on Tour I will make sure I come back for you. “
But Ahmad was not done. He wanted something official. A pinky promise. Federer agreed.
Five years later, in 2022, that promise turned into a real moment on court.
At 11, Ahmad was invited to train in Zurich. As he practiced, young fans cheered his name. Then he was told a “worthy opponent” had arrived. When he turned around, it was Federer. Ahmad was not yet a professional, but the match became one of Federer’s final on-court appearances before announcing his retirement later that year.
Fast forward to now. Ahmad trains at the John McEnroe Tennis Academy, which proudly posted: “We are so proud of him for having the opportunity to showcase his talent on one of the world’s biggest stages,” followed by: “Go get ’em Zizou.”
Ahmad is currently ranked No. 130 in the ITF Junior World Rankings and has played just one professional match so far, a 4-6, 4-6 loss to fellow American Ryan Colby, who is ranked ATP 837, in November 2025. Last year, he reached the US Open Boys singles main draw and even had the chance to hit with world No.8 Felix Auger Aliassime before the tournament. Now at Indian Wells, he faces qualifying rounds as he looks to earn a main draw spot alongside stars such as Alex de Minaur, Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz.
