Critical Chrome Security Alert: Indian Govt Urges Immediate Update

Key Takeaways

  • High-severity warning issued for Google Chrome users in India
  • Multiple vulnerabilities could allow remote code execution and data theft
  • Immediate browser update required for Windows, macOS, and Linux users

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a critical security alert about multiple high-risk vulnerabilities in Google Chrome. The government agency warns that millions of Indian users could face remote attacks and sensitive data exposure if they don’t update their browsers immediately.

Who Is Affected by This Chrome Security Threat?

This security warning affects all Google Chrome users on desktop platforms:

  • Linux users with Chrome versions earlier than 142.0.7444.59
  • Windows and macOS users with versions prior to 142.0.7444.59/60

CERT-In specifically states the alert applies to “all end-user organisations and individuals using Google Chrome for desktop.”

CERT-In stated, “Multiple vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to Type Confusion in V8, inappropriate implementation in V8, Extensions, App-Bound Encryption, and Autofill; object lifecycle issue in Media; race in V8 and Storage; incorrect security UI in Omnibox, Fullscreen UI, and SplitView; policy bypass in Extensions; use-after-free in PageInfo and Ozone; and out-of-bounds read in V8 and WebXR,” the alert read.

What Are the Potential Risks?

The vulnerabilities span multiple Chrome components including the V8 JavaScript engine, extensions, autofill functions, and media handling. Successful exploitation could enable attackers to:

  • Execute arbitrary code remotely
  • Bypass security restrictions
  • Perform spoofing attacks
  • Disclose sensitive information
  • Take complete control of affected systems

According to CERT-In, “Successful exploitation of these vulnerabilities could allow a remote attacker to execute arbitrary code, bypass security restrictions, perform Spoofing attack or disclose sensitive information on the targeted system.”

How to Protect Your System

Chrome users should update their browsers immediately through these simple steps:

  1. Click the three-dot menu in Chrome
  2. Select “Settings” then “About Chrome”
  3. Click “Update Chrome” if available
  4. Restart the browser to apply updates

Applying these security patches significantly reduces the risk of exploitation and protects against potential attacks targeting these vulnerabilities.
