Over ₹5,800 Crore in ₹2,000 Notes Still With Public: RBI

More than a year after their withdrawal, ₹2,000 banknotes worth ₹5,817 crore remain in circulation, according to the latest Reserve Bank of India (RBI) data. The central bank confirmed that 98.37% of the high-value currency has been returned to the banking system since the demonetisation announcement in May 2023.

Significant Reduction in Circulation

The total value of ₹2,000 notes has plummeted from ₹3.56 lakh crore on May 19, 2023 – when withdrawal was announced – to just ₹5,817 crore. The RBI emphasized that the withdrawn notes continue to be legal tender.

Exchange and Deposit Facilities

Since the withdrawal announcement, the public has been able to exchange ₹2,000 notes at the RBI’s 19 issue offices nationwide. From October 9, 2023, individuals and organizations were also permitted to deposit these notes directly into their bank accounts at these offices.

India Post Service Available

People can send their ₹2,000 notes to RBI issue offices through any post office in India via India Post. The amount is then credited directly to their bank account.

RBI Office Locations

The RBI’s 19 issue offices are located in major cities including Ahmedabad, Bengaluru, Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Jaipur, and Lucknow. The central bank regularly provides updates on the withdrawal progress.
