Wikipedia Founder Warns of Grokipedia Threat, Musk Says ‘Calm Down’

Key Takeaways

  • Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger warns Grokipedia could threaten Wikipedia’s relevance
  • Elon Musk dismisses the warning, saying “He should calm down, this is day three”
  • Grokipedia launched with 885,000 AI-generated articles as a Wikipedia rival

Elon Musk’s AI startup xAI has launched Grokipedia, an AI-powered encyclopedia with 885,000 articles, positioning it as a competitor to Wikipedia. The launch has sparked a public exchange between Musk and Wikipedia co-founder Larry Sanger, who left the platform in 2002.

Wikipedia Founder Issues Warning

Larry Sanger, who has been extensively testing Grokipedia since its launch, warned that the new platform could threaten Wikipedia’s relevance unless his proposed reforms are adopted. He shared his nine theses advocating structural changes including public leader identification and competing articles per viewpoint.

In a direct message to Wikipedia, Sanger wrote: “Wikipedia, in light of a strong launch from Grokipedia, you’d better get your house in order—or you’ll go the way of the Sears catalogue. Are you listening yet?”

Elon Musk’s Dismissive Response

While Sanger’s original post didn’t receive a reply from Musk, when another X user reposted the warning, Musk responded: “He should calm down, this is day three of the v0.1 launch.”

Sanger’s Initial Grokipedia Impressions

Earlier this week, when Musk announced Grokipedia’s launch, claiming “even at 0.1 it’s better than Wikipedia in my opinion,” Sanger offered his assessment: “My initial impression, looking at my own article and poking around here and there, is that Grokipedia is very OK. The jury’s still out as to whether it’s actually better than Wikipedia. But at this point, I would have to say ‘maybe’!”
