Who is Maria Corina Machado who won Nobel Peace Prize Trump is vying for?

Maria Corina Machado, a Venezuelan opposition leader, was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for her unwavering commitment to promoting democratic rights and advocating for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy in Venezuela.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee recognised her as a unifying figure in Venezuela’s opposition, highlighting her tireless efforts despite facing severe threats and being forced into hiding. Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes emphasised the importance of recognising individuals who stand up for freedom under repressive regimes.

NOBEL PRIZE AND TRUMP’S CLAIMS

In the lead-up to the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize announcement, US President Donald Trump actively campaigned for the honour, citing his involvement in various international peace initiatives. He claimed credit for mediating ceasefires in conflicts involving Israel and Hamas, Armenia and Azerbaijan, Cambodia and Thailand, as well as India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor.

Additionally, he asserted that he had played a role in resolving disputes between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda, Egypt and Ethiopia, and tensions between Serbia and Kosovo. However, many of these claims were met with skepticism, and experts questioned the veracity of his involvement in these conflicts.

Despite multiple nominations from international figures, including Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Pakistan’s government, who credited Trump for his diplomatic efforts in the Middle East and South Asia, the Norwegian Nobel Committee ultimately awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Mara Corina Machado.

The Committee emphasised her sustained commitment to promoting democracy and human rights in Venezuela, highlighting her role in advocating for a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.

HOW DID MARIA BECOME ONE OF VENEZUELA’S BIGGEST LEADERS?

Born on October 7, 1967, in Caracas, Maria is the eldest daughter of psychologist Corina Parisca and businessman Henrique Machado Zuloaga. Apart from being a prominent Venezuelan politician, she is an industrial engineer, and human rights advocate.

Machado holds a degree in industrial engineering from Andrs Bello Catholic University and a master’s degree in finance from the Instituto de Estudios Superiores de Administración (IESA) in Caracas.

Machado began her political journey in 2002 by co-founding Sumate, an organisation dedicated to election monitoring and promoting citizens’ rights. She later became the national coordinator of Vente Venezuela, a liberal political party she founded in 2013. Throughout her career, Machado has been a vocal critic of the regimes of Hugo Chavez and Nicols Maduro, advocating for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law in Venezuela.

In 2011, Machado was elected to the National Assembly, serving until 2014. During this period, she was known for her strong stance against governmental abuses and her efforts to expose institutional corruption. Her involvement in the 2014 Venezuelan protests led to her expulsion from the National Assembly and subsequent criminal investigations by the government.

MARIA CORINA MACHADO’S MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

In the 2023 opposition primaries, Machado secured a decisive victory with over 92% of the vote. However, in June 2023, she was disqualified from running in the 2024 presidential election by the Venezuelan government.

Undeterred, Machado endorsed Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who was allowed to compete and won the July 28, 2024, election with 70% of the vote. Despite facing significant repression, Machado’s leadership was instrumental in unifying Venezuela’s pro-democracy forces during this pivotal moment.

In 2024, Machado received these prestigious international awards:

Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought: Awarded by the European Parliament, this honour recognised Machado and fellow opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez for their efforts to restore freedom and democracy in Venezuela.

Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize: Presented by the Council of Europe, this prize acknowledged Machado as the first Latin American recipient.

PERSONAL LIFE

Machado is married and has three children. Despite facing numerous challenges and threats, she remains a steadfast advocate for the Venezuelan people, embodying resilience and hope in the struggle for democracy and justice.
