‘Gen Z has no personal style’: Millennial designer on which generation has better fashion sense

Gen Z fashion trends: Apart from the million other things Gen Z is known for, they are known to be the pros at recreating Pinterest-inspired outfits. From sporting fairy core in the day to embracing goth-chic by nightfall, fashion doesn’t leave Gen Z’s side. Inspired by streetwear, some even choose to stay close to oversized tees and baggy jeans

Speaking to financialexpress.com at the Lakme Fashion Week, Papa Don’t Breach designer Shubhika shared her opinion on the difference between the fashion of millennials and Gen Z. “There is a disappearance of personal style”, she said when asked about who does fashion better, referring to the lack of personal style in the generation-Z.

‘The Internet has been an equaliser’

Expressing her hope that Gen Alpha brings back the clarity in fashion sense, Shubhika gave her reason why she feels the lack of originality among Gen Z. “The Internet has been a great equaliser, everybody has the same option, in terms of access,” she noted.

Today, buying or aspiring to buy luxury products is still a click away with global brands delivering at your doorstep. With the “boundaries blurring between ‘access’ and ‘aspiration’,” Shubhika wishes that Gen Z pushes a “little harder” to develop their personal style. Pointing out an important trend, though, she acknowledged that the generation is much more conscious of which brand they associate with, in terms of consciousness and values.

Ayesha Kanga, the Netflix star who was the showstopper for the fashion designer’s collection with Enamor, on the other hand, told financialexpress.com that Gen Z is a much freer generation. “People are far more comfortable being themselves, and not being boxed in,” Kanga remarked, answering our question. “People do whatever they want; they are super unapologetic about it,” she added, putting the onus on the upcoming Gen Alpha and what they bring to the fashion parade.

‘I don’t blame Gen Z for it’

In extension to the conversation, Shubhika also opened up about who’s setting the trends, and what’s trickling down. “They are not investing a lot of time, putting unique designs out there…it has become all about trends,” the millennial designer added. “I don’t blame Gen Z for it,” she remarked, pointing out the lack of originality in the retail options available to the public.

Recalling an anecdote from her education days in London, she remarked that each rack of clothes shouted ‘pick me!’ Aligning with the ‘fashion is art’ school of thought, Shubhika remarked that brands have moved away from it and are solely focussed on “what will sell and what won’t.”
